Ouroboros is a decentralized packet network launched in 2020. It enables users to send and receive data across a distributed system rather than through centralized servers. The platform is designed for anyone seeking… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. After watching too many "privacy" apps get subpoenaed or shut down, I wanted a communication tool that literally cannot be shut down because it has no servers to seize. Ouroboros is a Rust-based P2P stack with two modes: 1. Live sessions: Two peers connect directly using just a shared passphrase. The passphrase deterministically generates identical network parameters on both sides, so they can find each other without any coordination server. 2. EtherSync spaces: Async file sharing and messaging in encrypted "spaces" that sync via gossip protocol when peers are online. Key features: -…

Hi HN, we build an open-source operating system extension for orchestrating robot swarms fully decentralized. This first beta version allows you to create fully decentralized robot swarms. The system will set up a wireless mesh network and run a p2p networking stack on top of it, such that nodes can interact with each other through various abstractions using our SDKs (Rust, Python, TypeScript) or a CLI. We hope this is a step toward better inter-robot communication (and a fun project if you have a few Raspberry Pis lying around). Our mesh network is created by B.A.T.M.A.N.-adv and we’ve…

Hey HN! I’ve written a bunch of WebSocket servers over the years to do simple things like state synchronization, WebRTC signaling, and notifying a client when a backend job was run. I realized that if I had a simple way to create a private, temporary, mini-redis that the client could talk to directly, it would save a lot of time. So we created DriftDB. In addition to the open source server that you can run yourself, we also provide https://jamsocket.live where you can use an instance we host on Cloudflare’s edge (~13ms round trip latency from my home in NY). You may have seen my…

Hey HN! I just released weron, a P2P VPN that uses WebRTC for transport which I've been working on for the last couple of months. It can create both layer 2/Ethernet and layer 3/IP overlay networks, and the underlying transport layer can be easily embedded to write your own P2P apps with Go. Compared to for example Tailscale, WireGuard and ZeroTier, its much harder to block on a network level and also significantly easier to set up, while not sacrifing much performance. I'd love to get your feedback :)

Hi HN! We’re Yann, Edouard, and Bastien from Koyeb (https://www.koyeb.com/). We’re building a platform to let you deploy full-stack apps on high-performance hardware around the world, with zero configuration. We provide a “global serverless feeling”, without the hassle of re-writing all your apps or managing k8s complexity [1]. We built Scaleway, a cloud service provider where we designed ARM servers and provided them as cloud servers. During our time there, we saw customers struggle with the same issues while trying to deploy full-stack applications and APIs resiliently. As…
