PdfRecast
Edit PDFs in your browser, with privacy in mind
What it does
https://pdfrecast.com/ PDF Recast is a browser-based PDF toolkit built to make everyday PDF tasks simple. Edit existing PDF text, work with scanned PDFs, add signatures, merge and compress files, and convert between PDF and Word A major focus is privacy: PDF Recast is designed to perform supported document processing in the browser rather than sending your personal documents to third-party processing services. We're actively improving and would love feedback from early users.
Edit, compress, merge, OCR, sign, and redact supported PDFs with local browser processing. PdfRecast keeps privacy at the center of PDF work.

Here's a neat hack I made recently to do basic PDF editing directly in a browser—without having to upload anything to a server. I was initially looking for a way to do simple PDF modification (extracting pages, merging, and adding page numbers). There are some good server-side tools for this (QPDF, PDFTk, PDFBox, iText, Hummus), but for better speed and privacy I really wanted a 100% client-side solution. There are a few good JavaScript PDF libraries for reading and displaying PDFs (pdf.js) and creating PDFs from scratch (jsPDF, PDFKit), but I couldn't find any for editing existing PDFs. So,…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
