Pipe – Authenticated Pubsub over SSH

Greetings! We are excited to announce pipe: our managed pubsub service over ssh. We are at a point where we would love to get feedback on the service to see if it resonates with the HN crowd. All you need to use `pipe` is a pico account which can be created using ssh: `ssh pico.sh` We've been using it internally for a few weeks now and keep coming up with new use cases. For example, we are using `pipe` to create a log drain for all of our services and even a way to share logs with users. You can read more about it on our blog post: https://blog.pico.sh/pubsub

Pipe – Authenticated Pubsub over SSH launched on October 9, 2024 with 11 votes, #1,114 of 5,185 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 2 years on.

In plain words

Pipe is a managed publish-subscribe service accessed entirely through SSH, requiring only a pico account created via SSH. It enables real-time message routing between services and applications without additional infrastructure. Users can set up log drains across multiple services, share logs with others, and create new messaging workflows. The service is designed for developers who prefer working within SSH-based environments.

  • Pico: An open-source Ngrok alternative built for production traffic2024 · github.com · ▲244

Pico is an open-source alternative to Ngrok. Unlike most other open-source tunnelling solutions, Pico is designed to serve production traffic and be simple to host (particularly on Kubernetes). Upstream services connect to Pico and register endpoints. Pico will then route requests for an endpoint to a registered upstream service via its outbound-only connection. This means you can expose your services without opening a public port. Pico runs as a cluster of nodes in order to be fault tolerant, scale horizontally and support zero downtime deployments. It is also easy to host, such as a…

    Pipenet – A Modern Alternative to LocaltunnelJan 2026 · pipenet.dev · ▲114

Hey HN! localtunnel's server needs random ports per client. That doesn't work on Fly.io or behind strict firewalls. We rewrote it in TypeScript and added multiplexing over a single port. Open-source and 100% self-hostable. Public instance at *.pipenet.dev if you don't want to self-host. Built at Glama for our MCP Inspector, but it's a generic tunnel with no ties to our infra. https://github.com/punkpeye/pipenet

  • An SSH based utility to transfer pipes across machines – beam2025 · github.com · ▲28

Hey HN, At work, I was annoyed about having to download logs by writing them out to files and transferring them over to my local over HTTP (admittedly, this is because of a rather novel architectural situation). So, I built a tool in Go that lets you pipe contents into an SSH server for sending and reading them out on another connection. You can also use this tool to transfer files. Just cat the file on the sender end and redirect the output of the receiver end to a file. Please note that the transfer rate is heavily dependent on your connection and proximity to the public ssh.beam.camp…
