Pocket Shuffle Chess
A new way to play and create with chess
What it does
You’ve played chess before. You haven’t played this. We wanted to make chess more unpredictable. So we built Pocket Shuffle Chess, a 5×6 chess variant where the starting pieces are shuffled, meaning there are no openings to memorize. Pocket Shuffle Chess started with a fairly simple question: Can we make chess faster, less dependent on memorised openings, and different enough that even experienced players have to think from move one? A format people recognise as chess, but play differently.
Play fast tactical chess on a 5x6 board. Randomized mirrored setups, a daily seed, AI games, leaderboards, and instant friend challenges - no opening theory.
Pocket Shuffle Chess is a free browser chess variant played on a compact five-by-six board. Every game starts from a seeded, mirrored back rank, so both sides hold identical material in an identical shape and neither player can fall back on memorized opening lines. A typical game lasts two to five minutes, which makes it a quick tactical chess game for a phone break rather than a study session. Pocket Shuffle Chess is a free browser chess variant played on a compact 5x6 board. Each game starts from a seeded, mirrored back-rank setup, so both sides get the same material and neither player can rely on memorized opening lines. The board is 5x6 instead of 8x8, each side has a king, queen, rook,…from pocketshuffle.com

I continue my experiment of transposing classic games onto an irregular grid. I've previously released variants of minesweeper and checkers. And now I'd like to share my variant of Chess. Chess can be a pretty punishing game, but I thought this was nevertheless a way to make it even more challenging by making it trickier to anticipate your opponent, even though both players still have the same information. From the playtests I've done, that challenge is pretty compelling. It also seems to be more fun at 2 people, where both players keep surprising one another.

Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

I made OwnTime to balance between competing priorities in my life. The idea is based on two main influences: the concept of "roles" from "The 5 Choices" (2015), and my repeated failure to effectively implement time blocking due to the necessary flexibility in my role. The app allows you to define time budgets, which are not much more than a few mutually exclusive countdown timers. The UX is essentially that of a chess clock for an arbitrary number of players with configurable time. The whole point of the app is to kick you out of the running role/priority when its time is up. One…
