Protobuf.com, a visual, interactive guide to Protocol Buffers
Protobuf is a fairly simple format, but the way people are first introduced to it often doesn't speak to them. That is how it was for me at first. I tried to address that in two ways: simple visual diagrams where a picture does the work better than prose, and interaction so you can get a feel for the language and how it behaves without installing anything. Some parts of the guide run a real Protobuf compiler, bufbuild/protocompile, in the browser through WASM. It's the same compiler the buf CLI uses. Feedback welcome. Disclosure: I work at Buf, and Buf owns the domain. The guide started…
What it does
Learn the fundamentals of Protocol Buffers: the schema-first architecture, how a message translates across representations, and how schemas become code.
Define your data and APIs once in a schema, generate consistent code for every language, and evolve them for years without breaking existing clients. This guide takes it apart, byte by byte. Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) is a schema-driven format for serializing structured data. The schema is a single source of truth for your APIs and data. Every team and every language generates code from the same definitions. Shared schemas let generated code catch many shape and type mismatches before data crosses a service boundary. Schemas can evolve without breaking what's already deployed. Clients built against older versions keep working. "Protobuf" refers to two things: an Interface Definition…from protobuf.com

- PBProtobuf Based Schema Centric Logging Framework2023 · logunify.com · ▲8
Hi HN, have been working on this as a side project, would appreciate any feedback :) LogUnify is built around schemas based on protobuf and all the events in LogUnify are structured. By schematizing events, we offer the following benefits: - Consistency: All the events across all platforms and languages are produced in a uniform way with the generated type-safe SDKs, which ensures data consistency from the root. - Shared Understanding: Event schemas with rich data types and metadata are self-explained, which enables different departments from developers to business stakeholders to share the…

Hi HN, After watching a lot of Show HN's here, it's finally my turn to show something. This is the first real project I have shipped, so it is extra special to me. For those who will inevitably ask why I made yet another mockup editor I covered it on our blog (http://blog.mocktailsapp.in/why-build-yet-another-mockup-editor-tm). Not all the features mentioned in that post have been implemented yet. As such Mocktails is pre-beta software and very minimal. It does not even have user accounts or any actual server side component at all for that matter (yet)! Our intention is to build Mocktails…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
