What it does

I ordered the cheapest Hetzner CX23 ($4.99/mo, shared-resources tier) and ran a real-workload SQLite benchmark on it. Not a microbenchmark — a 6 GB database on a box with 3.7 GB of RAM, so reads actually have to touch disk. journal_mode = WAL synchronous = NORMAL -- safe, not strict-ACID durable page_size = 8192 cache_size = 256 MiB mmap_size = 256 MiB temp_store = MEMORY busy_timeout = 5000 One caveat worth being explicit about: synchronous=NORMAL is not durable in the strict ACID sense . A power loss can roll back the last few committed transactions — whatever was in the WAL but not yet fsync 'd to the main DB file. The database file itself will not corrupt — corruption is what…from s13k.dev

  • My Go SQLite driver did poorly on a benchmark, so I fixed it2023 · github.com · ▲234

https://github.com/ncruces/go-sqlite3 was doing poorly on this benchmark that was posted yesterday to HackerNews [1]. With the help of some pprof, I was able to trace it to a serious performance regression introduced two weeks ago, and come up with the fix (happy to field questions, if you're interested in the nitty gritty). It's not the fastest driver around, but it's no longer the slowest: comfortably middle of the pack. It's based on a WASM build of SQLite, and thanks to https://wazero.io doesn't need CGO. [1]:…

  • Turbolite – a SQLite VFS serving sub-250ms cold JOIN queries from S3Mar 2026 · github.com · ▲185

I built a SQLite VFS in Rust that serves cold queries directly from S3 with sub-second performance, and often much faster. It’s called turbolite. It is experimental, buggy, and may corrupt data. I would not trust it with anything important yet. I wanted to explore whether object storage has gotten fast enough to support embedded databases over cloud storage. Filesystems reward tiny random reads and in-place mutation. S3 rewards fewer requests, bigger transfers, immutable objects, and aggressively parallel operations where bandwidth is often the real constraint. This was explicitly inspired…

  • AnuDB– Backed on RocksDB, 279x Faster Than SQLite in Parallel Workloads2025 · github.com · ▲22

We recently benchmarked AnuDB, a lightweight embedded database built on top of RocksDB, against SQLite on a Raspberry Pi. The performance difference, especially for parallel operations, was dramatic. GitHub Links: AnuDBBenchmark: https://github.com/hash-anu/AnuDBBenchmark AnuDB (Core): https://github.com/hash-anu/AnuDB Why Compare AnuDB and SQLite? SQLite is excellent for many embedded use cases — it’s simple, battle-tested, and extremely reliable. But it doesn't scale well when parallelism or concurrent writes are required. AnuDB, built over RocksDB,…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
