Rest of the Owl

Hey all! My girlfriend is really good at drawing and wants to become an illustrator for children's books, so she's practicing drawing various animals. We were at a cafe and she got stuck staring at a blank page trying to draw a fox using a reference photo. So I generated some pencil sketches from the reference image with ChatGPT. Seeing the drawing broken down step by step made it easier to start for her. The next day she asked me to generate sketches for 10 more photos, so I decided to polish my prompts and wrap the workflow in a self-service app for her. The app allows you to upload any…

What it does

Upload any image and get a 5-step pencil drawing breakdown, from basic shapes to final shading. Bust through the "blank page moment", warm up creatively, or just have fun sketching.

Turn any photo into 5 step-by-step pencil drawing exercises. Upload an image and get shapes → outline → shading → finished sketch in minutes.

Upload an image. Get five pencil drawing steps, from basic shapes to a fully detailed pencil drawing. Upload any photo (for example, an owl!). We’ll turn it into 5 pencil sketches. Use the generated pencil sketches to warmup, learn, and breaking through the "staring at the blank page" moments. Rest of the Owl works with all kinds of images - click on one of them below and practice drawing for free. The sketches for every photo was one-shotted with the app - no retakes. No subscriptions. Start with just one photo, or save withfrom restoftheowl.app

Made this website as an exercise in vibe-coding and GCP. It was posted about a few times around the internet, on sites like Morning Brew (https://www.morningbrew.com/issues/business-buzzkill), MetaFilter (https://www.metafilter.com/209703/Draw-A-Fish), boingboing.net, etc. I think it's cute! I built a basic CNN trained against penises and swastikas, and then anything that doesn't hit the 63% confidence score gets sent to a mod queue, a vibe-coded fish-tinder…

Hey HN! I used to spend hours drawing all kind of things as a kid. Sadly though, those drawings are long gone. Inspired by this, I created DoodleDreams. A webapp that brings drawings to life using AI and stores them as memories. You can always look back at the drawings, see who made them, and even know the age they were drawn at. I thought it was a fun way to preserve those memories. What do you think? Viktor

Hey HN, I want to share a personal project: I made a tiny pen-plotted book for my wife. I did everything myself—drawings (with some help from Midjourney), plotting, cutting, and binding. I even used a 3D printer to make a helper tool. It's absolutely over-engineered, but I enjoyed it a lot. Multi-disciplinary projects, especially those with a physical output, are a lot of fun for me. The post covers the process in detail, but if you're interested in anything specific, let me know. Cheers!

Anyone can participate in the project by voting for the next image to be drawn, and submitting images. https://kilopx.com/

  • Kitten TTS is an open-source series of tiny and expressive text-to-speech models for on-device applications. We are excited to launch a preview of our smallest model, which is less than 25 MB. This model has 15M parameters. This release supports English text-to-speech applications in eight voices: four male and four female. The model is quantized to int8 + fp16, and it uses onnx for runtime. The model is designed to run literally anywhere eg. raspberry pi, low-end smartphones, wearables, browsers etc. No GPU required! We're releasing this to give early users a sense of the latency and voices…
