I ride most weekends, usually out of Manhattan and up 9W. By the end of a ride I have hours of GoPro footage and one .fit file with per-second speed, power, heart rate, cadence, and GPS. Absolutely no one wants to watch 3 hours of being stuck behind Citibikes on West Side Highway. It's fun to look through past footage, identify the fun parts, and put together a narrative to remember. But since cycling is already time consuming, manually editing a highlight reel edit per ride is a nonstarter. So I built and open-sourced https://github.com/ianmacomber/ride-recap. I identify compelling moments from four separate sources: * Garmin telemetry via .fit file (speed, HR, power spikes, sprints, climbs) * Strava via API (popular segments) * Gemini vision scan + rating of individual frames * (optional) hand-labels via Streamlit app The fusion step has a LLM narrative pass pick 20 clips to best tell the story of the ride, boosting “cross-source agreements” (if a human label + telemetry + Strava + Gemini all agree that a clip is interesting), with greedy re-ranking and a crowding penalty to avoid clips too close to something already selected. Obvious in retrospect, but there’s no substitute other than looking at the clips Gemini selects, being highly opinionated about what should / should not be included, being specific enough about why, and repeating until you can’t think of anything more to improve. You cannot teach an LLM taste if you do not have taste yourself.

Gemini Embedding 2 can project raw video directly into a 768-dimensional vector space alongside text. No transcription, no frame captioning, no intermediate text. A query like "green car cutting me off" is directly comparable to a 30-second video clip at the vector level. I used this to build a CLI that indexes hours of footage into ChromaDB, then searches it with natural language and auto-trims the matching clip. Demo video on the GitHub README. Indexing costs ~$2.50/hr of footage. Still-frame detection skips idle chunks, so security camera / sentry mode footage is much cheaper.

I've been working on this Claude Code pipeline for making 10-minute movies, gluing together Seedance (videogen), Nano Banana (image gen), and ElevenLabs (voice gen), and using Claude as the director. My repo contributes a markdown playbook and a worked example which should make it easier for other people to make their own short movies. A first-pass movie takes around 2.5 hours of wall clock time and costs around $200, and iterating is easy thanks to intermediate artifacts like storyboards and voice samples.

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano.
