Spltty – a Markdown-based personal finance CLI built with Claude
I built Spltty, a Ruby CLI for tracking shared expenses, custom splits, and settlements using plain Markdown files. The article explains how it evolved from a Claude-managed folder into a CLI

What it does
How I turned a folder of Markdown ledgers into a deterministic CLI that handles the math while Claude handles the fuzzy input.
My wife and I share money the way most couples do: with very poor documentation. Some things are hers, some are mine, and some are ours—but not necessarily 50/50. At one point, a wedding, an apartment renovation, and a six-week trip to Montreal were all happening at once. Records arrived as PDF statements, screenshots of credit card bills, photos of Pix receipts—Pix is Brazil’s instant payment system—or me saying out loud, “I paid R$700 for the dress fitting.” Before we lived together, the only thing we tried to track was travel. We used split-the-bill apps, usually a different one for every trip. None of them stuck. Bookkeeping was my job, and I always did it after the fact: reconstructing…from tdiniz.dev

Lowfat – pluggable CLI filter that saved 91.8% of my LLM tokensJun 2026 · github.com · ▲156Hi HN, not sure if anyone would be interested, but just wanted to share that I've been maintaining my small tool called 'lowfat' that helps me filters some of my verbose CLI output. It's a single binary, works as an agent hook or a shell wrapper. It has a plugin system to customize filters per command. The idea is pretty simple: agents don't need the full kubectl get -o yaml or any 10k-line dump to make decisions. So that lowfat sits in between, strips the noise, and passes through what matters. Here's my real report after 2 months of personal use: lowfat history --all lowfat plugin…

Retain – A unified knowledge base for all your AI coding conversationsJan 2026 · github.com · ▲45Hey HN! I built Retain as the evolution of claude-reflect (github.com/BayramAnnakov/claude-reflect). The original problem: I use Claude Code/Codex daily for coding, plus claude.ai and ChatGPT occasionally. Every conversation contains decisions, corrections, and patterns I forget existed weeks later. I kept re-explaining the same preferences. claude-reflect was a CLI tool that extracted learnings from Claude Code sessions. Retain takes this further with a native macOS app that: - Aggregates conversations from Claude Code, claude.ai, ChatGPT, and Codex CLI - Instant full-text…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Clipto MCP▲655Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
