Stop It – an iOS app using visual therapy to help break habits

I’m an indie dev and recently launched a small iOS app called Stop It. It’s designed to support people trying to quit or reduce habits like smoking, snus, sugar, or social media. The app uses bilateral visual stimulation — moving patterns inspired by EMDR therapy — to help interrupt the craving cycle and bring a moment of calm.

It employs bilateral visual stimulation—moving patterns based on EMDR therapy—to interrupt cravings and create moments of calm. The app is designed for people actively working to break unwanted habits and offers a therapeutic approach to managing the urge to engage in these behaviors.

Beat nicotine cravings in 60 seconds with StopIt. Visual therapy inspired by EMDR bilateral stimulation, for quitting smoking, vaping, snus and zyn. Works offline.

StopIt shows you moving visual patterns — bilateral visual stimulation, the same class of technique used in EMDR therapy. EMDR is an established psychotherapy for trauma, and clinicians also apply it to cravings and addiction. StopIt is a self-help tool you can use in 60 seconds when an urge hits. It is not therapy, and it does not claim a clinical success rate. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach that helps process distressing memories and beliefs. Originally developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s for trauma treatment, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—like guided eye movements—to help reprocess triggers and reduce their psychological…from stop-it.app

I made Sober not Sorry, a clean and simple iOS tracker to help quit bad habits — alcohol, smoking, or anything else. Open it → log your start date → it tracks your streak. No ads, no sign-up, no subscriptions. I built it because most “sober” apps felt cluttered or too motivational. This one just quietly tracks progress and stays out of the way. Would love feedback — especially from people who use streak or sobriety trackers.

Hi HN, I built ScreenBreak after realizing that most app blockers failed in practice. “Hard blocks” were too rigid — I either locked myself out entirely or tapped Ignore Limit and kept scrolling. There was no useful middle state. In reality, people still need to open apps like TikTok or Instagram for specific tasks: looking something up, replying to someone, checking updates, etc. The problem isn’t intentional use; it’s the unplanned, unconscious scrolling that follows. I wanted a system that interrupts the impulse without fully preventing access. ScreenBreak uses soft blocking plus…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  • I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
