The Tomb of Nefertari [QV 66] Guided Virtual Tour

I 3d scanned the Tomb of Nefertari and am building this guided virtual tour, trying to bring in photogrammetry of artifacts that I've made at various museums. It crashes sometimes still on mobile devices. I wasn't able to take photogrammetry photos of the artifacts from the tomb in the Museo Egizio in Turin because they were traveling while I was there (and now the museum is closed to install a new roof anyhow), so I tried to include comparanda from other museums where I had scanned artifacts. I tested the same dataset with 3d Gaussian Splatting but that had lower resolution results for…

In plain words

The Tomb of Nefertari Guided Virtual Tour is an interactive 3D experience of the ancient Egyptian tomb created using photogrammetry scanning. It combines a 3D scan of the tomb itself with photogrammetry models of related artifacts from various museums to provide archaeological context. The tour is designed for history enthusiasts and students interested in exploring Egyptian burial sites. The experience is still in development with occasional mobile crashes, and incorporates museum artifacts as contextual comparisons to the original tomb contents.

In the maker’s words, at launch

I 3d scanned the Tomb of Nefertari and am building this guided virtual tour, trying to bring in photogrammetry of artifacts that I've made at various museums. It crashes sometimes still on mobile devices. I wasn't able to take photogrammetry photos of the artifacts from the tomb in the Museo Egizio in Turin because they were traveling while I was there (and now the museum is closed to install a new roof anyhow), so I tried to include comparanda from other museums where I had scanned artifacts. I tested the same dataset with 3d Gaussian Splatting but that had lower resolution results for great complexity in frontend code and reduced performance on older devices. [3DGS tour: https://mused.com/en/tours/860/learn-about-3d-gaussian-splat...] Moving forward, if anyone's working on the same idea, I didn't find a good path to monetization through web-based 3d content, so I'll take the high resolution photogrammetry of spaces into Unreal and switch to desktop and headset builds.

Hey all, I’m coding up a new tour system for my 3d Egyptian work. After the last feedback, I focused on building more interactive content and fx into the guided tours with sound and telling the mythology in the wall art. I’d love feedback with the new version – this is built with vanilla Three.js and footage captured on my iPhone 12. For various fx, I coded many of my own shaders based on work by https://twitter.com/akella and others on ShaderToy, so I’m keen to test on more devices. As the hacker, so the (ancient) painter.

    I 3D scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza2022 · giza.mused.org · ▲1,752

Hey HN, I 3d scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid / Khufu's pyramid for the Giza Project this summer and just finished the guided version to share. Would love feedback and/or problems you encounter. I used both a Leica BLK 360 and Matterport Pro 2 to do the scanning and the Matterport SDK for the web viewer. Matterport's web display with Three.js has been the most accessible to a wide audience in the past (previous iterations are in Unity and Unreal, but difficult to download over slower connections). I've been interviewing social studies teachers around the 6th grade level to…

    I 3D scanned the tunnels inside the Maya Pyramid Temples at Copan2024 · mused.com · ▲462

With these 3d captures, you can explore the 4km tunnel system that archaeologists created inside the temples at Copan that are closed to the public. The tunnels are often flooded by hurricanes and damaged by other natural forces--and collapsed on me and my Matterport scanner more than once--so this is a permanent record of how they appeared in 2022-23. Unlike Egyptian pyramids, the Maya built their temples layer by layer outward, so to understand them, researchers tunneled into the structures to understand the earlier phases of construction. I arranged the guided versions of the virtual…
