The Tortoise – a sophisticated retirement calculator

Hi HN! I've been working on this calculator for some time now. It started off as a tool to help me do some retirement planning and I think it could be broadly useful to others as well. It's very generic, which is both good and bad. Good, because you are not beholden to the assumptions of the model, like in many other calculators. This also means that it’s not US centric. On the other hand, you do need a bit of financial planning knowledge to be able to use it effectively. There are many retirement calculators out there -- here's what I think The Tortoise does better than most: 1. An easy to…

What it does

In the maker’s words, at launch

An easy to use UI 2. Exposes all of the model's assumptions 3. Gives more detailed results than many calculators (more to come), and trusts the user to interpret them 4. Gives you the ability to export/import and save your scenarios 5. Allows you to compare different scenarios, and also perform 'what-if' analysis on Debts and Assets 6. Independent of any other business so there's no conflict of interest I also think there’s a real need for more financial education, and I hope that tools like this one will spark people’s curiosity and drive them to learn more. Let me know what you think, and if you have any suggestions or questions!

Most retirement calculators either oversimplify things or ask you to link your accounts so they can make money off your data. I wanted something that actually helped me see if I was on track without handing over a bank login, so I built RetireNumber. It's a privacy-first retirement planner. You type in your own numbers. No account linking, no selling your data, no VC. Just me and a subscription. The engine does real math: Monte Carlo with 1,000 runs, historical backtesting to 1928 using Shiller's Yale data, tax-aware withdrawal strategies, and scenario comparison so you can try different…

An API to store balances and transactions2020 · ▲151

Hey everyone! I'm Rob and I want to share what I've built - a solid ledger behind simple API: https://decimals.app The ledger is a key piece of any financial system and is easy to get the design wrong, resulting in troubles for making sure money movements are adding up. I took a lot of inspiration from good designs from Square, Uber, and others for the scalability and security aspects. And on the usability side, I applied many concepts from the Ledger CLI, making it very easy to use. I'm really happy I get to show this to you all, thank you for reading about it! Please let me know…
