Towards agentic Graph RAG: Enhancing graph retrieval with vector search

In this post, we document the results of some experiments comparing vanilla Graph RAG (just a single pass of text2cypher) vs. a router agent Graph RAG approach that can call vector search tools alongside text2cypher. The routing agent uses an LLM to decide which vector search tool to call, depending on the terms identified in the question, and it works quite well. The results show that recent frontier LLMs like `gpt-4.1` and the trusty workhorse `gemini-2.0-flash` produce great quality Cypher reliably and reproducibly, with some prompt engineering to ensure that the graph schema is formatted…

What it does

In the maker’s words, at launch

In this post, we document the results of some experiments comparing vanilla Graph RAG (just a single pass of text2cypher) vs. a router agent Graph RAG approach that can call vector search tools alongside text2cypher. The routing agent uses an LLM to decide which vector search tool to call, depending on the terms identified in the question, and it works quite well. The results show that recent frontier LLMs like `gpt-4.1` and the trusty workhorse `gemini-2.0-flash` produce great quality Cypher reliably and reproducibly, with some prompt engineering to ensure that the graph schema is formatted well in the text2cypher prompt. Across a suite of 10 test queries (that are moderately complex and require paths to be retrieved from the knowledge graph), `gpt-4.1` and `gemini-2.0-flash` pass all tests, generating the right answers when a router agent is added to the workflow to enhance vanilla Graph RAG. Prompt engineering is done using BAML (a programming language that makes it simple to prompt LLMs and get structured outputs from them in all experiments. In fact, the knowledge graph itself was constructed using BAML prompts that extract entities and relationships from unstructured data upstream. A logical next step to this workflow is to build more complex agent loops that can run multi-step Cypher queries whose results can be consolidated to answer harder questions (similar to how a human would approach it). The general principles of testing and evaluation would apply here, too. Seems promising to explore these methods further!

Hi HN, While building RAG agents, I noticed a lot of token budget was wasted on formatting overhead (HTML tags, JSON structure, whitespace). Existing solutions felt too heavy (often requiring torch/transformers), so I wrote this lightweight, zero-dependency library to solve it. It includes strategies for context packing, PII redaction, and tool output compression. Benchmarks show it can save ~15% of tokens with negligible latency overhead (<0.5ms). Happy to answer any questions!

Hey folks, Elias here. Excited to unveil my latest project. Why I Built This: Traditional keyword search isn't cutting it. I've used LLM-embeddings to provide more nuanced, relevant results. How It Works: LLM-embedding similarity on curated datasets for semantically similar results. No need to iterate over keywords any more. Current Datasets: - YC Companies - Show HN Posts, - Ask HN Posts - ProductHunt Startups - Github Top 200k Repos Use Cases: - Validate a product idea's existence - Check if someone already Asked HN something - Have fun - search random terms and see what pops up Want to…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

  • Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
