Vibez – Open-Source Rust Based Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)

vibez is a free and open source DAW for electronic music, built around live jamming with Sections and pads.

In plain words

Vibez is a free, open-source digital audio workstation built in Rust for creating electronic music. It focuses on live jamming through Sections (musical ideas) and pads, allowing users to perform, arrange, and mix tracks. The workflow emphasizes real-time experimentation with keyboard controls, letting musicians jam out ideas, refine arrangements, and polish mixes. It targets electronic music producers seeking a straightforward, open-source alternative to commercial DAWs.

From the sources

vibez is a free and open source DAW built around Perform, Arrange and Mix. Jam out a tune, polish the arrangement and finally focus on the mix. This is a live techno session made with Sections, Track Mutes and Capture, followed by the final arrangement and mix. Press 1234 / QWER / ASDF / ZXCV. Give it five minutes and the layout starts to disappear. A Section holds one musical idea. Put the drums, bass, chords and anything else that belongs together into it. The next Section might be a small variation or a different tune altogether. Use Track Mutes while the music is playing, then press F5 to record what you did into Arrange. You get normal clips and automation, so you can edit the take…from alexanderwanyoike.github.io

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
