Visualising real-time Sydney bus congestion with Marey charts
As a side project I built Sydney Transit Graph - a visualisation of real-time Sydney bus congestion. Each line on the graph (a Marey chart) represents a bus completing its route (percentage) over time.
Visualising real-time Sydney bus congestion with Marey charts launched on November 22, 2022 with 57 votes, #1,066 of 3,471 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 3 years on.
In plain words
This tool displays real-time Sydney bus congestion using Marey charts, a visualization method that shows how transit vehicles move through stops over time. It helps commuters and transit enthusiasts understand bus network patterns and congestion levels across Sydney's public transport system. The project launched in November 2022 and is designed for anyone planning trips, studying transit systems, or interested in data visualization of urban mobility.

As a side project I built Sydney Transit Graph – a visualisation of real-time Sydney bus congestion. Each line on the graph (a Marey chart ) represents a bus completing its route (percentage) over time. It’s open source on Github , however I am no longer hosting it due to server costs. The web app displays a map side by side with a Marey diagram. When you move your mouse across the horizontal (time) axis of the diagram, the locations of the buses are displayed at that point in time. The colour of the line represents the occupancy (warmer colours -> higher occupancy) of the service. Sydney Transit Graph uses a Marey diagram to view bus congestion in Sydney – showing the…from jakecoppinger.com

I built a transit travel time map2023 · map.henryn.xyz · ▲255This was something I built while trying to look for housing in Toronto that was decently transit-accessible to my office while still cheap. The backend is written in Rust. It parses public GTFS data from transit agencies and performs a simple heuristics-based BFS on the bus lines to calculate how long to reach all points in a city. The frontend uses React and Mapbox GL to render each individual road segment based on how long it takes to reach. This project was a great excuse to learn Rust, deployments, and mapping. The source code is here if you are interested:…

I visualized the entire history of Citi Bike in the browserJan 2026 · bikemap.nyc · ▲113Each moving arrow represents one real bike ride out of 291 million, and if you've ever taken a Citi Bike before, you are included in this massive visualization! You can search for your ride using Cmd + K and your Citi Bike receipt, which should give you the time of your ride and start/end station. Everything is open source: https://github.com/freemanjiang/bikemap Some technical details: - No backend! Processed data is stored in parquet files on a Cloudflare CDN, and queried directly by DuckDB WASM - deck.gl w/ Mapbox for GPU-accelerated rendering of thousands of…
Public transportation signage based on bloom filters (rough mockup)2023 · github.com · ▲128Hello, I was running around Germany, hectically navigating public transportation, and getting lost all the time. I noticed that every station had i platforms, each used lists of n buses (trains, whatever) arriving, each has their list of m destinations. That means I would be scanning i x n x m items just to see if I was at the correct stop. As I was nervous, for every bus that arrived, I would rescan the list of stops to double check. I began thinking how I could make a better system. Linked is a very shoddy mockup of how bloom filters could be used to allow passengers O(1) lookup time for…
Traceroute Visualizer2025 · kriztalz.sh · ▲98Hey everyone, I've made this website that I hope can help some people. The original inspiration comes from being tired of having a specific site (and finding it!!) that serves my needs for a single purpose. Straight forward tools, no fuss. The objective is to be fully in-browser, no login and if possible without contacting a remote server. PGP Key Analyser - Analyze PGP keys directly in your browser - finally I can see the infos without having to download the key on my device Proton Date - Check ProtonMail account creation dates - pretty niche I admit Favicon Hash - Generate website favicon…

I made a thing! In 2014, I was holding a stack of iPhones and thought to myself: "Hey, if I had each phone display a playing card, I could click a button and they'd shuffle themselves" I pared that idea all the way down to this: trading cards made of e-ink displays. Right now, each card costs me about $20 each, but with only a bit more scale, I think I can get that down to $10. In doing this project, I learned how to design electronics and circuit boards. I learned Rust and wrote my first driver, I upped my CAD skills, 3D printed, and did my first resin casting. I generated the images on the…
