24 alternatives to A desktop app that blocks work when you bite your nails

Saw this repo: https://github.com/tldev/posturr and wanted to share my solution to avoid nail biting :)

This desktop application monitors users via webcam and blocks work activity when it detects nail biting. Built as a behavioral intervention tool, it uses computer vision to identify the habit and automatically pause… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

Hey HN! I made this app because I bite my nails way too much while I code It uses Mac's Vision library to track the location of your hands and mouth via the webcam. Then when it catches you biting, it temporarily covers your screen with a big obnoxious warning. You have to stop biting if you want to continue seeing anything. It's helped me a lot, so I hope it can help other nail-biters here :)

I recently switched from hybrid home office to being fully remote. I realized I'd developed a new habit: biting my nails, something I never did in the office. I've built a small utility app that lives in your macOS menu bar and uses the webcam to detect when you start biting your nails or touching your face. All processing happens on-device, and no data ever leaves it. Detection's frames per second and some overlay styles can be customized.

Hi HN, I built ScreenBreak after realizing that most app blockers failed in practice. “Hard blocks” were too rigid — I either locked myself out entirely or tapped Ignore Limit and kept scrolling. There was no useful middle state. In reality, people still need to open apps like TikTok or Instagram for specific tasks: looking something up, replying to someone, checking updates, etc. The problem isn’t intentional use; it’s the unplanned, unconscious scrolling that follows. I wanted a system that interrupts the impulse without fully preventing access. ScreenBreak uses soft blocking plus…

Hello. I was looking for a simple and clean habit tracker. I went through a few apps but felt they were missing something. I also had some time on my hands, so decided to make my own and share it in case anyone else likes it. Some of the supported features: Streaks based, track and beat your longest streaks Fully useable offline Freezes (similar to Duolingo's streak freezes) Visual map for tracking consistency Pause the app when you need a break or will be away For anyone curious about the tech stack: - React for frontend - Dexie cloud for storage and syncing - Vercel for hosting Link:…

Hi HN, It's super hard to quit addicting apps. Existing solutions are non-binding, and therefore, require constant self-discipline and vigilance to be effective. Which is ironic, considering the problem we are trying to solve, is a lack of self-discipline. There exists a physical solution to this problem, in the form of a time-locked safe[1]. It’s effective for reducing app usage, but it's cumbersome and inconvenient. Fundamentally, what these lock-boxes do is impose a real-world cost on breaking your commitment. It’s not impossible to break your commitment, but it would require destroying…
