24 alternatives to An Almost Free, Open Source TURN Server
Hi HN, I have been messing around with WebRTC for a few years now but when it comes to the TURN server I never quite got to my gold standard of free, self-hosted and open source. I decided to give it a go using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's free tier, meaning that my total spend got down to domain name hosting. I know plenty of people have been burnt by Oracle in the past, but I have had servers running on the free tier for 5 years now without so much as a hiccup. Regardless, the concepts will be the same using any cloud based server. This is the first time I've written up an end-to-end…
This is an open-source TURN server implementation designed for WebRTC applications. It runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's free tier, requiring only domain name hosting costs. The project is self-hosted and open… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Prices are shown for the 1 we have checked on their own sites, 1 of them free or with a free tier.

Hi HN, After 9 years of running my own OpenStreetMap tile server infra for MapHub (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11389989), I've open-sourced it and launched OpenFreeMap. You can either self-host or use our public instance. Everything is open-source, including the full production setup — there’s no 'open-core' model here. Check out the repo (https://github.com/hyperknot/openfreemap). The map data comes from OpenStreetMap. I also provide weekly full planet downloads both in Btrfs and MBTiles formats. I aim to cover the running costs of the public…

Hey HN! I’ve written a bunch of WebSocket servers over the years to do simple things like state synchronization, WebRTC signaling, and notifying a client when a backend job was run. I realized that if I had a simple way to create a private, temporary, mini-redis that the client could talk to directly, it would save a lot of time. So we created DriftDB. In addition to the open source server that you can run yourself, we also provide https://jamsocket.live where you can use an instance we host on Cloudflare’s edge (~13ms round trip latency from my home in NY). You may have seen my…

Hi HN! I’m so excited to show my first open-source project and first post here. I initially started this project to learn Go language, it is an experimental project. The main goal is to track the adventure of a WebRTC stream from start to finish, by debugging the project or tracking the output at console. By trying out this project, you will deep dive into the steps which are taken while starting up a WebRTC session, and more. It consists of a web UI (TypeScript) and a server back-end (Golang) projects. They can run on Docker containers, in development mode or production mode, you can find…

Hi, Piotr here I was collecting nice open-source companies for quite some time now. Mostly to take some inspiration and learn from their code. Last week, I though it would be fun to learn this Astro thing everyone's talking about. So I thought building a directory website out of this collection was pretty good idea. After 2 days of building, OpenAlternative was born. It's a community driven list of open source alternatives to proprietary software and applications. Enjoy and thank you for your support!

TL;DR: I built a lightweight, self-hosted HTTP tunnel that turns localhost into a public HTTPS URL. No paid plans, no secret black boxes. Just one Go binary, Caddy with wildcard TLS, and a $0/month Oracle Cloud VM. GitHub repo Why I Built It My development workflow lives mostly on a free Oracle Clou

I built this as a small side project to learn and experiment, and I ended up with this! I used a subdomain from my personal portfolio, and everything else runs on free tiers. The project uses Nuxt, SVG, Cloudflare Workers, D1 (SQL), KV, Terraform, and some agentic coding with OpenAI Codex and Claude Code. What started as a joke among friends turned into a fun excuse to build something end to end, from zero to production, and to explore a few things I’d never touched before. I’d really appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Local development with .local domains and HTTPSfree tier, from $8/mo▲84Hi HN! I'm Jarek, and I've built this tool that allows publishing .local domains on the local network using mDNS. It also has a reverse proxy that handles HTTPS termination and port forwarding. I'm working on adding more features, like an index page with all available domains or allowing proxy redirects, so you could redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Hey guys, I wanted to introduce you my hacknight project. It is a tribute to onekb.net which has stopped its service a few years ago. Currently it is still a beta where external resources are also possible (but not the point ;) ) to get your opinions. When it is finished, the source code will be open source. The secret word is therefore also hackernews. P.S.: The source code is currently 2.4Kb I'm trying to make it smaller. 1Kb would be my goal.

wsgrok▲7I built it for myself because ngrok didn't let me add one more domain unless I paid $12 more. I probably should've looked for alternatives before building my own, but my grudge got in the way . Once I started, I wanted to make it better than the other options. Silly, I know. No one probably cares. I plan to open source it sometime next year because I’ve got other projects to finish first. It's free until I deplete my cloud credits, then it will switch to a tier-based model with a free option.

A few days ago, I created a simple service for my WebRTC Project: https://github.com/miroslavpejic85/mirotalk to test if the STUN/TURN servers are working properly. After installing and configuring a STUN/TURN server, most of the developers that are new to this stuff will ask themselves, how do I know if it's working properly? So I made a snippet :) ``` Test Stun/Turn Servers Test Ice Servers The STUN server is NOT reachable! The TURN server is NOT reachable! const Ice = document.getElementById('ice'); const IP = document.getElementById('ip'); const Stun =…

We built it from the ground up, minimal Linux based operating system (written in go and rust), messaging system written in rust and infrastructure as code support (terraform and pulumi) There is even a dashboard, and a playground UI to manage it (that you can even run yourself) . Beautifully decentralized, you have full control of everything, you can deploy on your own servers if the cost of the cloud is too much. You can even run the whole system yourself if you want to. Here is a link to documentation https://manual.grid.tf/ Also, we are honored if it piqued your interest,…
