Hi HN community, I’m Zach, founder and CEO of Warp, and am excited to show you Warp, a fast Rust-based terminal that’s easy to use and built for teams. As of today, Warp is in public beta and any Mac user can download it. It works with bash, zsh, and fish. The terminal’s teletype-like interface has made it hard for the CLI to thrive. After 20 years of programming, I still find it hard to copy a command’s output; I always forget how to use `tar`; and I always have to relearn how to move my cursor. To fix fundamental accessibility issues, I believe we need to start innovating on the terminal,…

Hey there! I just released the first version of a project I’ve been working on solves a very specific problem that perhaps only I have. I welcome any and all feedback, even if you just want to drop in to say that this is a hot piece of garbage!

There are multiple programs for working with log files, both inside and outside of the terminal. These tools are feature rich and functional and offer lots of control to the user. However, a lot of the time I found myself just opening raw log files in `less`. I enjoy the simplicity of quickly skimming through the logs, but it was difficult when the wall of text was in one color. For this reason, I created a command line tool called `tailspin` (the name is a take on the `tail` command) that did one thing: highlighting of log files. It is configurable, but requires no setup. It defaults to…

I've built a tool called sol (like "soul") that helps you inspect and format complex shell one-liners. Features: - Choose which transformations you want (break on pipe, args, redirect, whatever) - "Peeks" into stringified commands (think xargs, parallel) and formats those, too - Auto-breaks at a given width (e.g., 80 characters) - Shows you non-standard aliases, functions, files, etc. that you might not have in your shell environment - Breaks up long jq lines with jqfmt because—let's be honest—they're getting out of hand As a security researcher and tool developer, I often encounter (or…

Sup HN, So I got tired of bouncing between Flightradar, MarineTraffic, and Twitter every time something kicked off globally, so I wrote a dashboard to aggregate it all locally. It’s called Shadowbroker. I’ll admit I leaned way too hard into the "movie hacker" aesthetic for the UI, but the actual pipeline underneath is real. It pulls commercial/military ADS-B, the AIS WebSocket stream (about 25,000+ ships), N2YO satellite telemetry, and GDELT conflict data into a single MapLibre instance. Getting this to run without melting my browser was the hardest part. I'm running this on a laptop…

Substage▲183Hey all! I’m a solo indie dev and I’ve been working on Substage – a Mac app that docks under your Finder window and lets you interact with your files using natural language. Stuff like: • Convert to webp • zip these up • Author of this PDF? • Download this file: • Is this really a PNG? • What's 5 foot 9 in cm? • Open in TextMate Substage converts your prompt into a Terminal command using an LLM (GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, or your own local model), runs it, and summarises the output. If it detects something risky, it’ll pause for confirmation before running. Commands run locally on your…

I initially built cs (codespelunker) as a way to answer the question, can BM25 relevance search work without building an index? Turns out it can, and so I iterated on the idea, building it into a full CLI tool. Recently I wanted to improve it by adding relevance of tools like Sourcegraph or Zoekt but again without adding an index. cs uses scc https://github.com/boyter/scc to understand the structure of the file on the fly. As such it can filter searches to code, comments or strings. It also applies a weighted BM25 algorithm where matches in actual code rank higher than…
