24 alternatives to Eliminate video buffering with a Chrome extension
This extension will replace videos on websites with a custom one that use download acceleration to prebuffer as you watch. It works on most websites, including Youtube. Fortuitously, it is also able to bypass Youtube's anti-adblock shenanigans. I started this project in high school to fix the terrible video players used on most websites. Since then, I've received a lot of feedback from my users and FastStream has improved significantly. Now that most bugs have been ironed out, I think I am ready to share it here on HN. It is still undergoing rapid development (multiple releases every week),…

Hi HN! Since Youtube no longer allows AdBlockers, I built my own extension to get around their video ads. If there is an ad it temporarily manipulates the video; Mutes the volume, sets speed to 10x, and skips it if there is a button. Stop Reels▲163Hey HN, I just launched a free Chrome extension called Stop Reels — it blocks Reels/short videos on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, without breaking other features like messaging or the regular feed. Why I built it Like many people, I found myself endlessly scrolling Reels even when I only opened the apps for something specific. The algorithms are too good at hijacking attention. There are tools to block entire sites, but none I found that just surgically block Reels and Shorts — and leave the rest of the platform functional (DMs, posts, marketplace, etc). So I built…

Hi HN! I built this little extension to prevent, in my opinion, the most offensive anti-pattern used by tech companies. That is removing the seek bar in short-form videos. The "seek bar" is the bar at the bottom of a video that progresses as you play the video, and that you can click on or drag to skip around. Why companies ever thought it was a good idea to get rid of this I don't know, but I find it infuriating, so I decided to add it back for myself and thought others might like it too. ReelControl adds a progress bar and seeking capabilities to videos on Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and…

I have made a browser extension that plays only the audio, blocking the video on YouTube, YouTube Music and all embedded YouTube videos in third party sites. It can also hide the thumbnails and avatars and skip the ads. It is compatible with Chrome, most of the Chromium browsers and Firefox. Additionally, it can be installed in smartphones using the Kiwi browser that supports extensions from the Chrome Web Store. I released the extension back in October, 2019 but from now the source code is available on GitHub as well.

Hi all, I'm an indie hacker and I've been working on watchlimits.com over last couple months. It's a chrome extension that helps you set limits (greatly customizable) and provides you stats and various accountability features. It only runs on the video streaming platforms (not everywhere) and it's privacy centric. Almost all functionality is available for free, but some advanced features only available in the paid version (password protection, allowed youtube channels). It's a pretty niche tool that originated from my own occasional struggles (lost sleep anyone?), even though many people…

I built FocusStream because I was tired of going to YouTube to learn one thing, then getting lost in recommendations and distractions. With FocusStream, just enter your topic and get only the relevant YouTube videos—no unrelated suggestions or autoplay. It’s free, minimal. Would love your feedback! Hey everyone, I'm a young developer with a penchant for music and quality software. I have spent the last 16 months developing an open-source Google Chrome extension which attempts to simplify the experience of using YouTube to play music. Streamus: http://streamus.com/ Streamus currently has 14,000 users and is the #1 trending / #4 ranked 'fun' extension in the web store. I've built it entirely from scratch while teaching myself the basics of BackboneJS (and Backbone.Marionette), RequireJS, GruntJS and many other, smaller libraries. It has been a great learning…
