24 alternatives to Ez – a macOS command runner that flags when a command gets slower

I built this because I didn't want to type longer project-specific commands. I work with a bunch of different tech stacks, so it's either a lot to remember or a lot of digging through various README files. Neither is great, so I wrote this little helper. ez stores aliases in a .ez_cli.json file per directory. The nice thing about this is that if you like you can have the same alias, e.g. ez test, ez build etc. in all your projects and for each one it does different things. Also, it's a natural place since you can then also commit it to the repo and thus share your best aliases with the team.…

After having cycled through various CLI-based todo apps, I started to realise that I actually don’t need a tool at all for managing my todos. Most of the time, my use cases are quite simple, like viewing my todo items, checking them off, or adding a new one. Rather than having to memorise CLI commands for these interactions (which I’m not super good at), I figured that it’s easier for me to use my text editor directly, and have an editor plugin help me with the visual structure and some convenience functionality. So, kind-of similar to Emacs Org Mode, but without having to use Emacs. I…

Hi HN — I’m learning Rust and decided to build a universal CLI for running code in many languages. The tool, Run, aims to be a single, minimal dependency utility for: running one-off snippets (from CLI flags), running files, reading and executing piped stdin, and providing language-specific REPLs that you can switch between interactively. I designed it to support both interpreted languages (Python, JS, Ruby, etc.) and compiled languages (Rust, Go, C/C++). It detects languages from flags or file extensions, can compile temporary files for compiled languages, and exposes a unified REPL…

Hey HN! I'm excited to share f2, a command-line tool I built for fast and flexible bulk renaming of files. It's cross-platform (Linux, macOS, Windows), executes a dry-run by default, supports undo, and provides incredible flexibility in file renaming with several built-in variables and Exiftool integration. If you've ever struggled with renaming large batches of files or wished for more control and speed when managing file names, this might be just what you need. I hope you find it useful!

Instead of a traditional command-style CLI, it runs as a TUI in the terminal, allowing users to inspect cleanup targets before proceeding. On my macOS machines, caches and app data often take up more than 40% of disk usage. Manually cleaning them each time felt tedious, so I built this tool to make the process easier. While similar tools exist, I found it hard to quickly understand how items were categorized or how important each cleanup target was, so I built my own. Repository: https://github.com/2ykwang/mac-cleanup-go Feedback is welcome.

Hey HN! I've built this cli tool to manage env variables of a project, but mostly for fun and to try out Rust and the clap crate. I had this idea when I made a big mistake and broke some production stuff because I had a very messy .env file laying around in my project. I was implementing new features for one of my projects and in my .env file I had the test database url commented out and the production one was not. Long story short, I applied migrations to the production database instead of my local test one and broke a lot of production APIs :') I wanted a tool that could easily help me…

Hey HN, we've been using Claude Code daily for months, and built Scape to fix our biggest pain point: managing multiple worktrees quickly & reducing the mental load of switching between them quickly. What we built: Scape is a macOS menu bar app that sits on top of Claude Code and gives you: - One-click worktrees: click a button, get a new git worktree with a Claude session already working on it. Develop in parallel without leaving your current branch. - Toolkit: per-session actions like "Create PR", "Commit & Push", "Run & Fix Tests." Add your own with bash scripts or prompts. -…

I've made an open-source microframework for creating command-line (CLI) applications in the Zig programming language. It's called Chilli, and it currently provides the following features: - A declarative API for defining nested commands, flags, and positional arguments. - Type-safe parsing of arguments from the command line and environment variables. - Automatic generation of formatted `--help` and `--version` output. - Support for command aliases, persistent flags, and other common CLI patterns. You can find the project on GitHub: https://github.com/habedi/chilli

Hi HN, I wanted to share my very first (insignificant) project written in Go: a little CLI tool that displays messages with an animated bunny holding a sign. I wanted to learn Go and needed a small, fun project to get my hands dirty with the language and the process of building and distributing a CLI. I've built a similar tool in JavaScript before so I thought porting it would be a great learning exercise. This was a dive into Go's basics for me, from package structure and CLI flag parsing to building binaries for different platforms (never did that on my JS projects). I'm starting to…

The startup I work for has an internal, bash-based, cli that basically amounts to shared aliases with a common entrypoint. As the number of aliases has grown, I've had a desire to group functionality together in subcommands, add more help strings, and have better tab completion. I know I could convert it to, e.g., a python script, but I was curious what was possible if we continued to use bash. I couldn't find anything that solved those problems without lots of extra machinery. I understand why, shell scripts are generally not long, and focused on a dedicated task; adding cli features to…

Hi HN! My name is Marko and I am working on a CI/CD system at harmont.dev, a CI/CD system that sucks slightly less. As I've been working on the cloud, I realized that the CLI might be generally useful as a task runner, even if you don't care for our CI/CD, and that's what I'm sharing here! Every CI system I've used at Tesla, Bun, and mesa.dev has had the same problems: stateless and slow (GHA), or stateful and horizontally unscalable (Jenkins), with YAML on top of either. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the realization that all my Claudes are waiting upwards…

I kept seeing people making macOS apps for their one-off use cases and automations. I thought surely the hassle of paying for an Apple dev account and fighting with code signing and notarization would be a deterrent for most people. Viberunner is a container environment that lets you build macOS apps with simple prompts. Hi HN! I built a CLI tool called ShellTalk for macOS, Linux, and web (WebAssembly) that maps English text to the corresponding Bash commands. ShellTalk is written in Swift and available under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub. I was inspired a few weeks ago after reading the Meta-Harness paper and seeing a tool called Hunch that did something similar using the Apple Foundation model. I often forget flag names and orders, but I wanted something that worked consistently. The 3B AFM worked surprisingly well with Hunch, but it felt slow and sometimes slight changes in what I wrote would result in…
