This is a project I've wanted to write for a long time now. I really love the ideas from Nix and I still have a ton of respect for the project, but Nix-the-language never felt intuitive to me and I wanted something with more approachable tooling (although this was circa 2016, so I'm sure Nix has improved a lot since then too-- that was before Flakes were around!) We built this because Nix is a great fit for making efficient containers. They don't need an OS because Nix captures all dependencies exactly. However, the current process of creating Nix images is subpar because one needs to transform Nix packages into a format that container runtimes understand. This is my attempt at helping those who are trying to ditch reddit but have not been satisfied with the content from Lemmy or haven't been able to find the corresponding communities. There are two sides to this project. The first one is that I have setup a Lemmy instance (alien.top) which is mirroring some of the reddit content from subreddits that I wanted to follow with the comments. For those unfamiliar, Nix is a powerful package manager and build system that ensures reproducible builds via strict dependency isolation.
