OP here: I created this visualization tool as the byproduct of a supply chain class I taught at Columbia. The pedagogical exercise grew into a full blown visualization and paper about global oil trade. The model: The mechanics are the same as the financial network Eisenberg-Noe: Instead of banks, every country consumes oil interconnected via bilateral trading. Shocks propagate throughout the network, depleting oil reserves when bottleneck nodes (such as the Strait of Hormuz) are blocked. Insights: The interesting part is the mechanics of how the crisis unfolds: for example, France receives 0…

Hi HN! We are Anshuman and Karén, the co-founders of Lookback Labs and the co-designers of Soros (https://www.asksoros.com/). Soros is a compound AI system built carefully from the ground up to trace a path (multiple paths, really) from a description of a geopolitical event all the way to capital market implications. * Here's how we set it up: Given a description of a given geopolitical event (can be a couple of words; the demo literally has "US-Iran conflict" as the entire string), Soros will - (1) first analyze and perform deep research on it, running scores of searches in…

Simulate anything on a map from a text prompt -- and conduct risk analysis against LiveUA map's global realtime data points from social media and news sources. I trained a GPT-2-size model on historical incident data used to predict things that will go wrong. As historian Benjamin Breen mentions, the leading language models are good historians, so the application will simulate historical events pretty well also. I include a Multi-Agent RL Urban Mobility model in progress displayed on the map as small white cubes representing traffic and pedestrians. Around SF, it uses real census data and…

Hi HN, Wanted to share a project I made over the weekend - a real-time fascism tracker. The site fetches recent news from trusted sources, filters it for keywords related to fascism and the current US administration, and then sends it to GPT-4o for classification according to the 14 characteristics of fascism described by Dr. Lawrence Britt. With the rapid pace of news in the US, especially post-election, it’s hard to keep up. I built this site so you can quickly see important topics and draw parallels with similar historical events. Would love to hear your thoughts. - Ryan

Hi HN, we're Jack and Daniel from Zep. We've built a visual exploration tool and AI assistant for analyzing Russian election interference in the run-up to next week's US elections. The Explorer uses Graphiti, Zep's open-source temporal Knowledge Graph library. Graphiti autonomously creates dynamic, temporally-aware knowledge graphs representing complex, evolving relationships between entities. To offer users a detailed view of Russian state operations and related topics, we populated the graph with over 50+ sources. These include US DOJ indictments, research by US and foreign governments,…

Hey HN! The idea for this started when I came across the election forecast of FiveThirthyEight [1]. They show a 1000 different possible election outcomes - each one possible. In this newspaper homepage, I try to turn these simulations into reality by feeding AI with as much detailed information about a simulation as I can (e.g. voting results per state). See source code here [2]. The whole process is explained in more depth in my blog post: https://nerology.substack.com/p/how-i-made-the-probability-t... [1]…

This is our Atlas of Water Science. It's a globe mapping water science that colleagues have done over the past few years. Approx 300 papers got analyzed. The pipeline sends open access papers to an LLM asks the LLM to extract areas relevant to science in a form suitable for a geocoder, then we use a geocoder to get lat lons. When things happen in the same spot we jitter the locations a bit to differentiate things. gpt4o-mini was used for most of the analysis. Some of the features on the website are directly invented by Claude. There are some errors when geocoding went wrong or locations were…
