24 alternatives to I built an online state machine editor

I built it with some thoughts to solve some centralized state management problems.

Protocol Designer is an online editor for creating state machines. Built to address centralized state management challenges, it provides a visual interface for designing and working with state machine logic. The tool… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Agentic problem solving in its current state is very brittle. I fell in love with it, but it creates as many problems as it solves. I'm Ben Cochran, I spent 20+ years in the trenches with full-stack Engineering, DevOps, high performance computing & ML with stints at NVIDIA, AMD and various other organizations most recently as a Distinguished Engineer. For agents to work reliably you either need massive parameter counts or massive context windows to keep the solution spaces workable. Most people are brute forcing reliability with bigger models and longer prompts. What if I made the problem…

It’s written in Python and I call it GoalChain. It lets you build a conversation flow graph that the user traverses. When there’s enough input it spits out a dictionary with the defined fields. Otherwise it will jump state to state as led by the user. It was fun to write, and it’s surprisingly effective if you keep in mind you’re prompt-engineering every string and field name. README.md has a mini-tutorial. Would be cool to get some ideas for how to build it further and what improvements I could make.

Feels a bit like Figma, but for coding agents. Instead of going back and forth with prompts, you give the agent a DESIGN.md that defines the design system up front, and it generally sticks to it when generating UI. Google Stitch seems to be moving in this direction as a standard, so we put together a small collection of DESIGN.md files based on popular web sites.

This is an open‑source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives any LLM a sense of the passage of time. Most MCP demos wire LLMs to external data stores. That’s useful, but MCP is also a chance to give models perception — extra senses beyond the prompt text. Six functions (`current_datetime`, `time_difference`, `timestamp_context`, etc.) give Claude/GPT real temporal awareness: It can spot pauses, reason about rhythms, and even label a chat’s “three‑act structure”. Runs locally in <60 s (Python) or via a hosted demo. If time works, what else could we surface? - Location /…

Hi HN! I've built [CXXStateTree](https://github.com/ZigRazor/CXXStateTree), a modern C++ header-only library to create hierarchical state machines with clean, intuitive APIs. It supports: - Deeply nested states - Entry/exit handlers - State transitions with guards and actions - Asynchronous transitions with `co_await` (C++20 coroutines) - Optional runtime type identification for flexibility It's ideal for complex control logic, embedded systems, games, robotics, and anywhere you'd use a finite state machine. I’d love feedback, use cases, or contributions from the…

We built a reference MCP server that lets your editor/agent learn a codebase directly from source (signatures, types, AST, comments). Docs are optional. The reference impl runs on our open-source project’s codebase. Why we built it Docs are important, but they add another abstraction layer between your code and your users. Keeping them at the right quality is hard (especially at a startup), and LLM-generated docs are often mediocre until you invest real polish. Exposing code to the model in a structured way keeps answers grounded and current, and it’s always available. You can even…

I've come to prefer modeling state machines with nested states, but implementing them by hand requires a large amount of error-prone boilerplate that obscures the important logic of the state machine. I found that the existing offerings in the Rust ecosystem - while inspiring - lacked a number of features that I was looking for, so I spent the last few months building moku. Feedback is welcome!

AgentState to solve a problem I kept running into: managing state for multi-agent AI systems is surprisingly hard. When you have multiple AI agents that need to coordinate, persist their state, and query each other's status, you typically end up with a mess of Redis/Postgres setups, custom queuing, and manual synchronization code. The whole thing is ~3MB, written in Rust for performance and safety, runs in Docker, and handles 1000+ ops/sec. I've been running it in production for AI workflows and it's been rock solid.
