I've been working on a little side project that combines Duolingo-like listening comprehension exercises with real content . Every video is transcribed to get much better transcripts than the closed captions. I filter on high quality transcripts, and afterwards a LLM selects only plausible segments for the exercises. This seems to work well for quality control and seems to be reliable enough for these short exercises. Would love your thoughts!

I built this project as a way to learn more about NLP by applying it to something weird and unsolved. The Voynich Manuscript is a 15th-century book written in an unknown script. No one’s been able to translate it, and many think it’s a hoax, a cipher, or a constructed language. I wasn’t trying to decode it — I just wanted to see: does it behave like a structured language? I stripped a handful of common suffix-like endings (aiin, dy, etc.) to isolate what looked like root forms. Hi HN, Just wanted to share a tool i've been working on to help with my own study routine. It’s a browser extension called Lingoku. The idea is simple: we spend hours browsing the web in English every day. This tool replaces some of the english words with Japanese vocabulary based on your japanese level (Similar to Toucan, but with a better user experience). As hard as I tried, I didn't find a modern language learning book that's either very academic, or like "master a language with my super-magic great method in 3 months". So I dug into the academic research, tried many techniques myself, saw what worked, wrote a book for learners of any language and any level, and made it free without ads. Hi When you are learning a new language, you need to practice different skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing. I find writing to be the hardest activity, not least because I have to look up words in the dictionary all the time, and that is a frustrating context switch. Here is an experimental CodeMirror-based editor, that lets you look up translations inline. If you had to build a context window manager in 24h, would you stick to the existing model or come up with something better? Here's what I did: 1. Built a proxy that intercepts Codex's calls to OpenAI and rewrites them on the fly. 2. Replayed 3,807 rounds of SWE-bench Verified traces through it: avg prompt 44k → 6k tokens (-87%). 3. We explored a novel method to gauge the significance of tokens in prompts given to large language models, without needing direct model access. Essentially, we just did an ablation study on the prompt using cosine similarity of the embeddings as the measure. We got surprisingly promising results when comparing this really simple approach to integrated gradients. Curious to hear thoughts from the community!

I recently custom prompted 1.5 pro to teach me new words by helping me to make sentences using them - the only way to learn vocab IMO. It's been helpful for my GRE prep, hope you may find it useful as well!
