24 alternatives to Live-updating version of the 'What a week, huh?' meme
As a fun evening project, I made a live-updating version of the 'What a week, huh?' meme (based on a panel from The Adventures of Tintin comics [1]). There's a page for every timeframe: - 'What a day': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/day - 'What a week': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/week - 'What a month': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/month - 'What a year': https://tintin.dlazaro.ca/year Current time is determined by a Cloudflare Worker using the request IP (not logged or stored). No JavaScript is sent to the browser. [1]…

I made this for when I come back from vacation and want to catch up on news. It's a bit of a simplistic LLM transformation on headlines and URLs that I store from RSS feeds. So it bugs out sometimes. But I think it might be useful to me. You can check out some of the prompts in the "debug" links. What do you think?

Hey all, we're reposting from our previous Show HN about 5 years ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28644205 Since then we've grown to more than 5k users across nearly 1k groups and have sent out more than 100k update prompts. The premise is simple - social media stinks and you either don't see updates from people you care about (they never post) or you miss the updates (flooded by other people's updates or an algorithm that downplays an update you'd care about even if it's seemingly unimportant). And we're ramen profitable (more so now that we've migrated the majority…

I scraped every Show HN from the last 12 months (41,301 posts) plus the full comment tree of every launch with 10+ comments, ~100k comment timestamps, all from the Algolia HN API. The median launch gets 2 points and 0 comments. For launches that do get traction, half the comments they'll ever get arrive within 7.2 hours and 90% within 26, and the top decile decays on the same clock as everyone else. Vote timestamps aren't public, so comment timing is the attention proxy; caveats are in the post. Everything reproduces from the repo with one command…

Hi HN. I built this (http://hashtagEvent.me) web app over the weekend, which starts to solve a problem that I'm sure many of you have too: I want a way to get calendar events from tweets. For example, if someone you follow is going to a GitHub meetup next week and they tweeted about it, I want this information displayed somewhere in an organized manner. That's what hashtagEvent.me does, it gets tweets (which for now follow a simple syntax) and creates events with the extracted dates and descriptions. In my mind that's a valid concept, but I'm slowly running out of venues where to…

I didn’t want another app, notification, or dashboard. I wanted a subtle daily reminder through something I already look at all the time — my desktop. So I built a small local-first daemon that updates the wallpaper once a day with a message aligned to my goals. 597 days ago, I posted about the project our team was developing - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3183322 - here on HN, and today we're finally taking the wraps off what we've been working on since then. At it's core, what we've been building is an end-to-end solution for creating, storing, and working with structured content in a way that's accessible to anyone. You can check out an introduction - http://team.marquee.by/introducing-marquee/ and dig into the technical/philosophical details of our approach -…

DailyPings (https://dailypings.com) is a HN-inspired platform where makers share their daily progress. Key features: - Three posts per day limit to encourage quality updates - HN-style upvote system - No comments, just pure progress sharing - Email verification Tech stack: - Next.js 15 App Router - TypeScript - Prisma ORM - PostgreSQL - NextAuth.js - Tailwind CSS - Geist Mono font - Deployed on Coolify The idea came from wanting a distraction-free space for makers to share their daily progress, similar to how HN works for tech news. The three posts per day limit is intentional - it…

I built this because I kept needing to answer "when is 3pm EST for my teammate in Singapore" and none of the existing tools felt right for me - they're mostly lists. I wanted a map where time differences are spatially obvious. A few things that were technically interesting to build: The day/night terminator. It's not just a shaded half-sphere. I implemented a simplified USNO solar declination algorithm, computing the subsolar point for a given UTC timestamp, then tracing the great-circle terminator and sampling which side each pixel falls on. It renders pixel-by-pixel onto a Canvas…

http://web2expo.heroku.com/ I had the opportunity to attend the Web 2.0 Expo earlier this week. While at the event, I was inspired to build out a prototype for a problem I saw with the Twitter stream. The problem is that hash tags are fleeting; Twitter focuses on live results, and we lose track of tweets over time. This was especially true during the Lean Startup Intensive. #leanstartup was great when it was live on Monday, with the results consisting of live tweets of each presenter. However, if we search for the hash tag now, we get a mess of content not specifically tied to that event.…

I built open-source cross-platform desktop app that turns your wallpaper into a visualization of your life in weeks, inspired by Tim Urban's Wait But Why post. Each square is one week. It updates automatically every Monday. You can visualize your entire life, the current year, or next N months. Tech details: Rust for the CLI (generates wallpaper images with cairo) Tauri for the cross-platform GUI Native wallpaper setting for Windows/macOS/Linux Automatic scheduling via Task Scheduler/launchd/systemd ~5MB CLI binary, ~15-20MB GUI installer Three modes: Life mode - see…

One station to find per day, 2 or 3 gamemodes depending on the city (if your city is not live yet, or you can't find it in the selector, try https://dailymetro.live/cityname/mode/classic ) Like https://dailymetro.live/sf/mode/classic for San Francisco Got huge traction in France, so I thought maybe you'll like it here too :) Made with Claude code but still took at least 50-100h of dev/design/taking user feedbacks ahahah Hope you like it
