24 alternatives to Monkeys.zip – 3000 Monkeys on Typewriters

Hey HN! I posted this on April 1st when it launched, and though it didn't get traction here, it was a minor hit on reddit! Now that we've got a few thousand monkeys under our belt, wanted to give it another shot here! Happy to talk about the technical details of running the site - using supabase/postgres and constantly putting out fires from the traffic.

Monkeys.zip is a website that simulates the concept of thousands of monkeys typing randomly on typewriters. The site manages substantial traffic using Supabase and PostgreSQL as its backend infrastructure. It appeals… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

Hey HN, This is my take on the agent harness. Everything on an isometric map. Agents are grouped into "buildings" that run in a sequence or a loop; e.g., the CodeForge has an agent that writes a PRD, another one that implements, and a third that reviews. Everything is customizable, you build your own buildings/teams however you want. It's a Tauri app, really light (about 8x less energy than the closest competitor I benchmarked, so it actually runs from a coffee shop on battery). It's macOS only for now, but ping me if you are willing to test the Windows or Linux version. I've been…

Paste in my prompt to Claude Code with an embedded API key for accessing my public readonly SQL+vector database, and you have a state-of-the-art research tool over Hacker News, arXiv, LessWrong, and dozens of other high-quality public commons sites. Claude whips up the monster SQL queries that safely run on my machine, to answer your most nuanced questions. There's also an Alerts functionality, where you can just ask Claude to submit a SQL query as an alert, and you'll be emailed when the ultra nuanced criteria is met (and the output changes). Like I want to know when somebody posts about…

Some technical context on what we ran into building this. MCP tools don't really work for financial data at scale. One tool call for five years of daily prices dumps tens of thousands of tokens into the context window. And data vendors pack dozens of tools into a single MCP server, schemas alone can eat 50k+ tokens before the agent does anything useful. So we auto-generate typed Python modules from the MCP schemas at workspace init and upload them into the sandbox. The agent just imports them like a normal library. Only a one-line summary per server stays in the prompt. We have around 80…

I've been building a tool that changes how LLM coding agents explore codebases, and I wanted to share it along with some early observations. Typically claude code globs directories, greps for patterns, and reads files with minimal guidance. It works in kind of the same way you'd learn to navigate a city by walking every street. You'll eventually build a mental map, but claude never does - at least not any that persists across different contexts. The Recursive Language Models paper from Zhang, Kraska, and Khattab at MIT CSAIL introduced a cleaner framing. Instead of cramming everything into…

Hi HN! This is a word search game I launched in the beginning of this year - didn't get much traction then, but it's been posted around a bit (right now getting some traffic from kottke.org) and now has over 12,000 words found! Now that it's a little more filled out I figured I'd share it again. Really enjoying seeing what everyone is making on it - it appears most people start by just adding a few words to the big clump in the middle, then adding to other people's projects (or ruining them) and finally working on their own little concepts. My favorite is the kitty to the north. Hope you…

Hey HN! I've always found it hard to keep up with the latest AI research, so I built Arxiv Feed! https://arxiv-feed.vercel.app/ It's basically a feed of AI research papers + a one-liner explaining what problem its solving, etc. You can also click on any paper to get a TL;DR. Right now, I've only indexed a few hundred large language model papers, but will expand to indexing AI papers in other topics. Thinking of also adding a way for people to up-vote/down-vote papers. Would love to hear any thoughts/feedback! :D Thanks!

This is a low-level opensource library I developed for my own use and decided to share, as it makes it possible to process large checkpoints of neural networks without renting high-RAM instances, on a regular PC. It replaces torch.load() with a custom function that produces a dictionary that materializes tensors on the fly. Compared to other solutions it doesn't require sharding or re-encoding checkpoints and uses them completely as-is. It is a foundation to make it possible to run inference and compress language models and other large models one layer at a time - in principle, even one…

I have a proposal that addresses long-term memory problems for LLMs when new data arrives continuously (cheaply!). The program involves no code, but two Markdown files. For retrieval, there is a semantic filesystem that makes it easy for LLMs to search using shell commands. It is currently a scrappy v1, but it works better than anything I have tried. Curious for any feedback!

hi! I’m a 17 y/o dev and I made this so I could show my wpm in code rather than just normal text :) this was my first project that I made awhile back but wanted to share it today.
