Over the past week I built a project to let people self-host an entire maps stack so they don't have to send data to the big G. Right now it includes a base map, geocoder and directions server. Currently only bicycle directions are supported, and I'm only hosting tiles for Seattle because I'm unemployed and can't afford to host data for the whole planet. Check it out! https://maps.ellenhp.me/ https://github.com/ellenhp/headway Ultimately I'd like to really focus on transit routing (not implemented) but I'll probably throw a driving mode in there too.

ohai! I've released Lightwhale 3, which is possibly the easiest way to self-host Docker containers. It's a free, immutable Linux system purpose-built to live-boot straight into a working Docker Engine, thereby shortcutting the need for installation, configuration, and maintenance. Its simple design makes it easy to learn, and its low memory footprint should make it especially attractive during these times of RAMageddon. If this has piqued your interest, do check it out, along with its easy-to-follow Getting Started guide. In any event, have a nice day! =)

docker-compose is great for single node docker deployments, but it doesn't have a feature that would allow zero downtime deployments. It's not possible to deploy often if your app goes down every time, and using Kubernetes/Nomad/Swarm on a single node is an overkill. I created this Docker plugin to be a drop-in replacement for the restart command in usual docker-compose deployment scripts. It performs a simple rolling deployment of a single service.

We kept hitting the same wall: you clone some arbitrary repo and just want it to run without any configuration work. So we built Keystone, an open source tool that spins up a Modal sandbox, runs Claude Code inside it, and produces a working .devcontainer/ config (Dockerfile, devcontainer.json, test runner) for any git repo. We build on the dev container standard, so the output works with VS Code and GitHub Codespaces out of the box. Main use cases: reproducible dev/CI environments, self-describing repos, and safely sandboxed coding agents. Our goal is to encourage all repos to…

Seven years in the making (I admit that I did get a kid at some point which slowed down progress and brought it to a halt quite a few times), I decided to finaly release it, with a rather drastic change to the now (I believe) generous licensing model. Unlike current major players in this field, I decided to go with uncrippled, free version for commercial use for corps with up to 1M USD ARR. I poured my heart and soul into this, not because I was looking for financial success, but because I felt it just had to be done, given the price hikes wherever you look today. While my wife and kid were…

We built it from the ground up, minimal Linux based operating system (written in go and rust), messaging system written in rust and infrastructure as code support (terraform and pulumi) There is even a dashboard, and a playground UI to manage it (that you can even run yourself) . Beautifully decentralized, you have full control of everything, you can deploy on your own servers if the cost of the cloud is too much. You can even run the whole system yourself if you want to. Hi HN, We are the team behind Shuttle (YC S20). We just shipped Neptune, (https://github.com/shuttle-hq/neptune-mcp) an open source MCP server that lets coding agents actually deploy software, not just write code. Behind it is an app deployment platform we built to be friendly for AI agents. Neptune runs in your IDE. It reads your codebase, analyzes its structure and intent using ASTs and inference, and generates a deterministic infrastructure spec called neptune.json. You can inspect every change, approve it, and apply it. Think: coding agents that can actually ship…

Golang is an incredible language for web development. That being said, indie developers and small businesses will likely miss extensive resources found in other projects like Django. Although building an application from the ground up using the standard library is possible, it can be error prone and time consuming. Pocketbase has almost everything an indie developer needs, supporting database, authentication, and file storage into a single, easy-to-deploy executable. Combined with HTMX, and you can created a full stack web application without bloated front end frameworks. That being said,…

I’m building Nautilus, a cross-platform desktop manager for Linux servers. While there are many SSH clients out there, I wanted something that combined a high-level dashboard, a full SFTP explorer with an integrated editor, and specialized tools like a Cron job manager and Process monitor—all in a modern, lightweight desktop package. Key Technical Highlights: Tauri + Node.JS Sidecar: We use Tauri for the native windowing and Rust security, but the heavy SSH/SFTP lifting is done via a Node.js sidecar (using ssh2). This allowed us to leverage a very mature ecosystem while keeping the…

Hello Hacker News, this is Ashish. We started building Stackdome in 2024 as a hobby project. The idea was to package the tooling in the CNCF/cloud-native ecosystem into an opinionated platform, so that developers can get a well engineered platform without learning Kubernetes YAMLology or a dozen other projects from the CNCF landscape. Railway and Render did this well for their hosted products. I wanted to bring that level of polish and DX to something you can self-host. Stackdome uses Kubernetes underneath, but it's completely transparent to users. (I have some ideas for an expert mode…

Hello HN, for the past couple of months I've been working on Routify and wanted to share the progress made so far and hopefully get your opinion/feedback on it. Routify is a global serverless API gateway which handles routing, authentication, rate limiting, load balancing, monitoring, transformation etc (with more coming soon). Routify makes it easier to manage and secure public APIs. It's distributed across many regions globally and acts as a proxy between your clients and your services. You can configure it through the interface in a matter of minutes (no code required). There are…

DOrch enables Engineers, Indie Hackers, and Startups to host a docker container (OCI-compatible containers at large), without having to set up or manage a container infrastructure. It comes with features like env variables management, file sharing, FREE subdomain issuance, TLS certificate management, and automatic restart, with more features in the pipeline. The console also allows you to view logs from your containers. The product idea occurred to me about 18 months ago, while working at a different startup. The strategy of the CEO was, spray-and-pray: we created lots of products hoping one…
