24 alternatives to My Yubikey Setup with Pass
I upgraded my encryption setup recently, so I thought I should write about it, just in case it is helpful to someone else. As a security professional, I have a different threat model from most folks, and as such my setup does involve a bit more complexity than what I’d recommend to everyone. But if

Hey y'all, This is something I've been working on for a few months. It is a passkey system, similar to Apple Passkeys or a Yubikey, but it is entirely software based so you can sync credentials between devices. Passkeys (and FIDO devices in general) allow you to use public keys instead of passwords or codes to authenticate. For instance, you can just click "Approve" on the device/software instead of having to copy a code, and there are no passwords to phish. This is a new piece of tech, so website support for logins are still limited, but it can currently be used for 2FA anywhere a…

I loved learning how to build end-to-end encryption. I thought you'd need to go through every record. I felt really silly when I learned how keys can be used. For context, I'd blown through half a million dollars over 4 years and had no idea where it went. So I'm trying to get a grip on it with this app. I can't use bank statements, because I'm using different electronic money institutions (EMI) and Lebanon barely supports paying by card. It took a while to get a UI I actually wanted to use... The part I'm still unsure about is adding old savings. Some find it intuitive but others find it…

Hey HN, A long time ago, due to the lack of viable solutions with E2EE and offline-first syncing, I decided to dedicate my time to making one (which has its own story: https://yaad.one/blog/yaad-story). In the course of ~3 years, I developed a knowledge management app with these primary features: - Primitives: Notes, Tasks, Contacts - Grouping with "Boxes" - Offline-first - Multiplatform; currently available for Android, Windows (x64), macOS, and Linux (ARM). - Fully end-to-end encrypted (AES-256-GCM) - 13 Languages, 8 calendar systems - Light & dark mode Last night, I…

Show HN: What I learned building a local-only password manager (PassForgePro) Hi HN, I built PassForgePro as a learning project to better understand password manager design, local-first security, and common cryptographic pitfalls. The goal was not to replace mature tools like Bitwarden or KeePass, but to explore: * how a local-only, zero-knowledge style design can work * key derivation with PBKDF2 and encrypted SQLite vaults (AES-256-GCM) * handling sensitive data in memory and clipboard cleanup * defining a realistic threat model and its limitations This project is experimental and…

Hello Hacker News! We’re Willem, Roeland, Felix and Madeline from Aikido Security (https://aikido.dev/) We’re building a “no BS’ application security platform. It’s the platform we wish existed, but couldn’t find. Willem, our CTO had to manage (application) security at many of his previous startups, and honestly, hated it. Most security tools we had to use made us feel dumb. They were super complex and riddled with false positives. Their platform was behind the book a demo button. They had intransparent pricing models and honestly charged us way too much. We think most of…

Hello HN! We are developers and security researchers making tools for developers to encrypt data at an application level while maintaining sole control of their keys. We believe that data should always be encrypted unless it is part of an active computation. Encryption is relatively easy, but key management is challenging. There are plenty of encryption tools and SDKs that are out there (Hashicorp Vault, AWS KMS etc.) but we are focusing on ease and speed of implementation, developer experience and self custody of keys. A few months ago, we quit our jobs and started full time on Phase. So…

Hello Hacker News, I'd like to share an investing/personal finance social news site I've pushed live a couple of days ago. It's based on the lobste.rs codebase, slightly repurposed to be more focused on discussion rather than link aggregation. I assume there’s a significant userbase overlap with HN since most of you who work in computing are well-positioned to retire early. There’s a running joke on /r/financialindependence that they are 99% software engineers. It's live at https://bitmia.com – if you’d like an invite, feel free to request one on the site. Hopefully…

Long story short: After heartbleed thingy decided to use a password manager. Didn't want to buy one. Didn't like KeepassX interface. Started using MacPass. Tired of bugs and form fillings. Decided to make my own text editor that can encrypt saved files with password. Try it out here: http://textcrypt.4apps.lv/app/updates/TextCrypt_1.0.424.zip and let me know what you think. Would you use it? Any feedback, suggestions which direction to go? p.s. Its an early Alpha version.

I had the idea to create a dedicated web page containing basic, easy-to-understand digital hygiene advice. So if a friend or relative asks you for advice on securing their digital lives, you can simply give them a link and hopefully they'll share it with their friends too. Hosting is on GitHub pages; just a single, semantic, accessible HTML file. I just made this today, so contributions are welcome, especially right now. I am not a security researcher, so if anyone finds an issue with what I've written in this first draft, or thinks some other point deserves mentioning, please tell me either…

Hello. I made this project as an experiment in using key cryptography for user identity in a client server model, and for some future peer to peer projects that I am working on. I am looking for feedback, please let me know what you think. Also, Merry Christmas to HN! :-)

I've been working on a C# implementation of Keyczar or months now. You can find it on github. http://jbtule.github.com/keyczar-dotnet/ It's feature complete, I've done a lot of unit tests, have about 90% code coverage, run various freely available static analysis, built it on linux and windows, but what I've really lacked is another person to actually look at the code. It's easy to make crypto mistakes, even when you know the common mistakes yourself. So I'd appreciate any comments, code reviews, thoughts, and issues. Thanks!

Hey HN: I'm Chino, the founder of Keyring (https://joinkeyring.com./), it's my first time posting here, nice to meet you all. Keyring lets users safely share subscriptions between household members. No passwords revealed (so that logins don't spread) and create a custom bundle of video, music, and news subscriptions between a group. We're the cable bundle for the digital generation. Previous to founding Keyring, I launched over 160 mobile apps, +50 of which hit the App Store's top charts and have advised two startups to exit, and have angel invested in a few startups, VinoVest…

Definitely one of those "20 minute adventure gone wrong" projects where all I wanted initially was a quick wireless rubber ducky for bitlocker keys and the like and then I kept adding stuff like AES-256..... Currently working on adding WebAuthn/FIDO support because the hardware is already there and scope creep is a lifestyle at this point. Would love feedback, especially on the security side. Repo and PCB files are fully open source.

We've set up DeekSeek R1 with a system prompt that attempts to censor the word PRIVATEKEY from its response. If you can get DeepSeek R1 to output that string (not in the reasoning, but in the final response), the system will reveal a private key which contains $1000 USDC. You will have a 50 token limit in the input. We will have a series of contests, sponsored by AI researchers, in order to learn more about prompt engineering and how LLMs interact with real money. Good luck! Edit: The money was claimed! Thanks for playing all. You can still play for fun. Stay tuned for the next one! Stats:…

Recently I became interested in knowing whether the passwords I used were in the list of breached passwords. One way to find out is to send your password to the link here https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords. However, while the owner of that website is a well respected security researcher, I still don't think it's wise to send my password to another website. So I downloaded the 24gb file, hashed my password and grepped the file for it. That unfortunately took a long time and I realized this was the perfect opportunity to use a BloomFilter and test the inclusion of a password…

I made 2024 Crypto Recap to make an engaging way to see how your crypto portfolio stacked up this year. If you aren't someone who spends all day monitoring the latest in crypto, but still have some crypto on eg Coinbase, you might have a general sense of how your portfolio is doing, but might not know other things like: - How did your portfolio fare vs the S&P 500 this year? - What were your best and worst trades, if you had any? - How does your crypto behavior compare to others? I made 2024 Crypto Recap to make a fun, quick way to see all these in a familiar format. I had the idea to make…
