Hi everyone! After spending hundreds of hours, we're excited to finally share our progress in developing a reinforcement learning system to beat Pokémon Red. Our system successfully completes the game using a policy under 10M parameters, PPO, and a few novel techniques. With the release of Claude Plays Pokémon, now feels like the perfect time to showcase our work. We'd love to get feedback!

I made a chess engine today, and made it fit within 2KB. I used a variant of MinMax called Negamax, with alpha beta pruning. For the board representation I have used a 120-cell "mailbox". I managed to squeeze in checkmate/stalemate in there, after trimming out some edge cases. I am a great fan of demoscene (computer art subculture) since middle school, and hence it was a ritual i had to perform. For estimating the Elo, I measured 240 automated games against Stockfish Elo levels (1320 to 1600) under fixed depth-5 and some constrained rules, using equal color distribution. Then converted…

I've been hooked on Queens puzzles (https://www.linkedin.com/games/queens/) for the last few months, and decided to try and build a solver for them. Rather than doing a traditional solution search, I tried to model it instead on how humans solve these puzzles, iteratively eliminating and confirming possible squares for Queens. And since this was a side-project, I decided to go overboard, and try and make it as fast as possible (avoiding HashMap/HashSet in favor of bit fields, for example).

Hey HN, I'm Aline, founder of interviewing.io and one of the authors of Beyond Cracking the Coding Interview (the official sequel to CTCI). We just compiled every problem (and solution) in the book and made them available for free. There are ~230 problems in total. Some of them are classics like n-queens, but almost all are new and not found in the original CTCI. You can read through the problems and solutions, or you work them with our AI Interviewer, which is also free. I'd recommend doing AI Interviewer before you read the solutions, but you can do it in whichever order you like. (When…

Two weeks ago I was on my babymoon in Corfu, Greece. While in transit, I was overseeing a GSoC intern submit an important feature to my array database library, Xarray-SQL. He added `to_dataset()`, which completed the roundtrip between thinking of array data in a tabular model simultaneously as gridded rasters (the premise of the project is that every Nd array can be mapped to 2d, where orthogonal dims of the Nd array are just primary keys of a tabular representation). We discussed in chat, now that this feature existed, what demos could we make that would prove this data model works? With…

I grew up on the Infocom games and when microsoft actually open-sourced Zork 1/2/3 I really wanted to figure out how to use LLMs to let you type whatever you want, I always found the amount language that the games "understood" to be so limiting - even if it was pretty state of the art at the time. So I figured out how to wrap it with Tambo.. (and run the game engine in the browser) basically whatever you type gets "translated" into zork-speak and passed to the game - and then the LLM takes the game's output and optionally adds flavor. (the little ">_" button at the top exposes the…

hey hn, I’m Filipe, a developer at supabase we have three projects using Elixir in a clustered setup. we’ve always used libcluster[0] to achieve it but ended up using multiple strategies. now we’ve converged into one approach for all our projects using Postgres as the coordinator. we’re using Postgres LISTEN and NOTIFY commands with Postgrex as the system to propagate node addresses so they can connect plus we use it to send healtcheck pings to heal when required. big thanks to https://twitter.com/gotbones for the libcluster library and…

We were genuinely impressed by Yann LeCun’s recent announcement about his Sudoku solver based on Energy-Based Models here: https://logicalintelligence.com/yann-lecun So we (a software engineer and prodigy mathematician) worked in the weekend to see if we can beat it and we did! If Kona solves puzzles in 313 milliseconds, we currently solve 270,000 puzzles per second! We do not know the internal mechanics behind Logical Intelligence’s system, but we are happy to share ours in the webpage there is a full description, code and also a paper published.
