24 alternatives to Portable Giant File Viewer
I’ve been dealing with huge log files lately, several GBs in size, and got frustrated with common tools such as Notepad++ freezing and crashing a server with limited RAM. I wanted something fast, relatively lightweight, and install-free for Windows. I have been searched around the web for a while but couldn't find an equivalent, so I built Giant Log Viewer. Features: - It is an equivalent of the Linux' `less` pager tool for Windows, but works on Linux and macOS too - Opens multi-GB UTF-8 unstructured log/text files instantly (without loading everything into memory) - Navigates through…
Portable Giant File Viewer is a lightweight, portable tool for opening and navigating multi-gigabyte log and text files on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Unlike standard text editors that freeze when handling large files… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

GUI disk analyzers are great for figuring out what's filling up your laptop/desktop drive. On containers or remote servers, the options are limited to purely text based utilities (e.g. du) or list-centric TUIs (e.g. ncdu) which are usually limited to viewing one directory at a time. I created leaves to fill that gap. Inspired by classic utilities like WinDirStat and KDirStat, it uses a 2-dimensional treemap^1 visualization to show the entire directory hierarchy with proportionally sized rectangles. It's performant enough to handle millions of files, thanks to Rust and multi-threading.…

Hey HN! I’m Karan, creator of Logchef (https://logchef.app), an open-source log viewer built specifically for exploring logs stored in ClickHouse. This tool grew directly out of my $day job managing massive log volumes. Like many orgs, we migrated our log workloads to ClickHouse for its performance, but found the ecosystem lacked dedicated UI tooling for actually browsing and analyzing those logs effectively. We were using Metabase, and while great for general BI, it wasn't designed for log exploration workflows. Common pain points included: - Clunky Ad-hoc Querying:…

Hi HN, I built an Android file viewer that opens PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, video, audio, Markdown and code, and asks for no permissions at all. I have always been uneasy about opening files people send me. On Android you either install a 400 MB office suite and sign in or use a small free viewer that wants storage access and ends up uploading your file to a server to render it. Also the hassle of having to download different apps for different file formats was really annoying. Gander holds no permissions, not even INTERNET so the OS itself guarantees the file cannot leave the…

I've created a powerful tool to help Go developers uncover the hidden giants in their compiled binaries. Go Size Analyzer is like an X-ray machine for your Go executables, revealing: Which dependencies are eating up your binary size Unexpected bloat from standard library or vendor packages Size changes between binary versions with a visual diff Key features that set it apart: Interactive treemap visualizations (check out the demo: https://gsa.zxilly.dev) Slick terminal UI for deep diving into package hierarchies Cross-platform support (works on Linux, macOS, and Windows binaries)…

Hey everyone! I’m working on Telescope - an open-source web-based log viewer designed to make working with logs stored in ClickHouse easier and more intuitive. I wasn’t happy with existing log viewers - most of them force a specific log format, are tied to ingestion pipelines, or are just a small part of a larger platform. Others didn’t display logs the way I wanted. So I decided to build my own lightweight, flexible log viewer - one that actually fits my needs. We built Gonzo to make log analysis faster and friendlier in the terminal. Think of it like k9s for logs — a TUI that can ingest JSON, text, or OpenTelemetry (OTLP) logs, highlight and boil up patterns, and even run AI models locally or via API to summarize logs. We’re still iterating, so ideas and contributions are welcome!

I wrote a little LD_PRELOAD library that makes it easy to inspect and interact with a running program's glibc heap. It's fun to pause processes, free a bunch of their allocations, then resume them. Most of the time, the processes continue as though nothing happened, but sometimes they do interesting things :)

This program provides a simple way of visualizing the different regions of a binary file. Written in C, depends only on libpng. Currently (commit 1dd42e3) it is able to generate PNG images that represent various aspects of the binary: - Grayscale: Byte values, 00..FF. - Ascii: Printability of each byte. - Entropy: Of a "block", changed with --block-size. - Histogram: Bar graph of the byte frequencies. - Bigrams: Each point is determined by a pair of bytes. - Dotplot: Measure self-similarity. Image width/height is N^2. In the future, I plan on adding an SDL version that allows the user…

I built qlog because I got tired of waiting for grep to search through gigabytes of logs. qlog uses an inverted index (like search engines) to search millions of log lines in milliseconds. It's 10-100x faster than grep and way simpler than setting up Elasticsearch. Features: - Lightning fast indexing (1M+ lines/sec using mmap) - Sub-millisecond searches on indexed data - Beautiful terminal output with context lines - Auto-detects JSON, syslog, nginx, apache formats - Zero configuration - Works offline - Pure Python Example: qlog index './logs/*/*.log' qlog search "error"…
