This is a Python (with Rust backend) library for high accuracy orbit calculation of the entire known catalog of asteroids. It is a full N-Body integrator, including lots of additional physics, such as relativistic effects, non-spherical gravitational fields of planets, masses of large asteroids, and a number of non-gravitational forces such as radiation pressure. The design goal is essentially JPL Horizons on your laptop, but all asteroids at once. I began this project while I worked at Caltech on a NASA mission called NEO Surveyor (which is a space telescope designed to survey Near Earth…

Hi HN! I’ve spent the summer of the past 2 years building The Atlas, a procedural universe simulator that generates 1 sextillion galaxies (10²¹) from a single mathematical seed. Think No Man’s Sky meets theoretical physics, but running entirely in your browser. Everything is purely deterministic, the universe is calculated from SHA-256 hashed seeds using the golden ratio as primordial constant. There’s no database, no pre-saved data, just pure math. Time itself is treated as a coordinate, so the universe exists as a 4D structure where any moment can be computed on demand. Shut it down for…

Hey HN community! Over the past year, AI copilots like Cursor and Windsurf have fueled a dramatic shift in software engineering workflows. And yet, many technical users in adjacent fields like data science and analytics have been unable to reap the rewards of this revolution. It turns out that the existing tools are a poor match for analytical workloads. Beyond that Cursor and similar tools have very poor support for Jupyter notebooks, data science is a fundamentally different discipline from software engineering and we believe it requires a correspondingly different tool. We're excited to…

I don't always all-caps, but when I do, it's because every word is an acronym. The NASA HORIZONS[1] system is a telnet service that provides planetary data and ephemeris tables, which are basically coordinate-time plots for celestial bodies. It's pretty archaic and somewhat difficult to use, especially since it just dumps out text tables and you have to parse it to do anything with it. Some projects, e.g. KDE Marble, use it as a data source and typically just consume it with a little procedural code to get what they need. I wanted to provide a full-fledged library for it so that you can…

Hi, I’m a cofounder of AstroBee and I wanted to share our work with the community. AstroBee is an automatic semantic layer generator for your business. It brings data together from different locations, storing it either in your data warehouse or in one we host. Then, AstroBee scans your data and models it to create an integrated source of truth (we call it an ontology because it’s structured like Palantir’s ontology). Once you have your source of truth, you can either build applications on top of it, or chat with directly to answer analytics questions. If you don’t like AstroBee’s original…

Hi HN, I'm a solo dev working on a space RTS game set in the Milky Way galaxy, containing currently known stars and exoplanets with their real characteristics, the remaining stars are procedurally generated. In the online mode, all players are in the same universe, and the world is persistent. You compete with other players to take back the Solar System and end your exile. Players can always retreat to the periphery to regain strength and rebuild their fleets as needed. It also includes an procedural spaceship generator that allows creating your own spaceship designs. Spaceships visuals…
