Last night, while trying to figure out the best way to implement caching in my app, I had an idea for a dirt-simple caching system based on a dependency graph. The premise I started with is that one of the hardest things to manage in a cache is dependencies between entities. In order to cache items effectively, you inevitably have to duplicate "child" data inside of "parent" entries. Then, when a child is changed, you have to invalidate the child and its parents, and its parents' parents, and so on. To try to help this, I hacked together a simple Node.js library called Stash, which models…

Raymond here from Butter.dev, an LLM response cache built as a chat-completions proxy. Today we're launching a key feature for the platform: the ability to generalize on dynamic, templated inputs. Caching at the HTTP request level has the obvious problem of generalizability. Nearly no request is identical, due to templated variables (like names) and metadata (like timestamps), so exact-match cache lookups rarely hit. We solve this at Butter by using LLMs to detect dynamic content in requests and derive their inter-relationships, allowing the cache entry to be stored as a template + variables…

I've already posted yesterday, but I'd really love to get comments, any kind of questions, suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated as it's an Open Source project of mine (and was for others during my studies at the University of Konstanz 6 years ago). Since then I spent countless ours to bring forth the idea of a versioned storage system, especially well suited for analytical tasks for timd-varying data. Especially I'd love to discuss what documentation you need, which next steps are necessary (JSON, Cloud...), API additions or changes... I've updated the README quiet a bit, such…

The FunctionCacher Python utility provides a way to cache the result of a (computation- or IO-heavy) function call to a location on the filesystem, ideally onto a ramdisk/tmpfs. This allows caches to exceed the lifetime of the program, which is useful for rapid-prototyping (& rapid-crashing) scripts. Caches are generated based function name, parameters, and code. Hey HN, For years, my local development setup has been a fragile mess of tools that never quite played nicely together. On my mac, it was a constant battle with Homebrew services starting (or not starting) on boot, conflicting PHP and Node versions managed by `asdf` or `nvm`, and a collection of `docker-compose.yml` files that I'd copy-paste and tweak for every single project. The cognitive load was just too high. Setting up SSL was another chore involving `mkcert`. Sharing a quick demo with a colleague meant firing up ngrok. And if I wanted to run two projects that needed different versions…

I made rm-safely, a simple shell wrapper that moves files to trash instead of permanently deleting them. It prevents accidental deletions from autocomplete mishaps or hasty rm -rf commands. Should work as a drop-in replacement for rm but safer. Would appreciate any feedback!

Hi, I'm fiiv, and I'm the creator of Cache Horse. I built it because I wanted an easy plug-n-play solution to caching and simplifying HTTP requests - in particular, on frontend. First, I was fetching data like daily weather, historic currency exchange numbers, air quality readings - and many of those APIs have quota limits. And second, since I was already caching them, I thought it would be useful to batch them together - so I built that feature in. I would love to hear your feedback and thoughts on the project. Thanks!

I'm developing a storage system for versioning data at the subfile level, especially well suited for SSDs due to its log-structured COW nature. It implements a novel versioning algorithm called sliding snapshot, a diff-algorithm which makes use of our stable record-identifiers and optionally hashes, another diff algorithm for importing similar XML-documents as a versioned resource as well as novel XPath axis to navigate not only in space, but also in time. Recently, I've implemented a higher level, asynchronous REST-API with Kotlin (Coroutines) and Vert.x in a seperate module. The system is…
