Products that do what Search Away – Housing search companion does
Hey HN, excited to share a side project I’ve been working on for the past few months. This started after getting frustrated trying to figure out where to live. I wanted an easy way to see how an area was changing. Are schools improving or getting worse? Is housing inventory increasing or decreasing? How does this compare to historic levels? Search Away brings together housing, income, school, census and crime data for over 33,000 zip codes and 87,000 schools. Housing data is updated monthly. All other information is updated when more recent data is published (every few months). Hope this…

For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. I was frustrating to have to juggle so many Google Maps tabs when I was evaluating a listing, and it was also annoying to not have full confidence that I was even searching in the right places. I wanted to be close to work, a Trader Joe's, and a…

Hi HN! A few days ago I saw a graph[0] that showed the # of job postings on HN was declining. I started wondering what other trends I could glean from the data, so I created this! You can filter through the top level comments by keyword; for example you can filter by "remote" to see the massive spike around March 2020. Another interesting thing I found is that I can compare hiring across cities. I hope you enjoy! I made it so that the links to your search are sharable so if you have some interesting data you should be able to just link the page you're on! [0]…

I created https://www.howmuchrent.com last Friday to help bring this kind of transparency to Ireland, allowing people to submit their rents. Would love to get any HN feedback on the idea/website.

Each dot on the chart is a car. Horizontal scale = mileage. Vertical scale = price. The size of a dot = year (newer = larger), plus I colored 2007 .. 2011 in different colors to find "fresh" cars quicker. This is just some sample data from the last 24 hours, relatively cheap cars under $32,000 within 500 mile radius of NYC.

We're a small team of 3 engineers, and wanted to make a better way to look for for properties online. Traditional portals (esp. outside of US) are just a bit rubbish for doing anything other than basic searching. So we've: - Created a crawler that reads through estate agents websites to find homes for sale - Parses that through a series of LLMs and other models to understand each home in depth (e.g. floor type, location, total sqft) - Parses every photo through an embeddings vector space so that people can search for whatever they want. historically, rentals in NYC have been pretty wild. the median 1BR in West Village as of July 2025 cost $5,750/month. about a month ago, NYC passed a law to ban broker fees which many predicted would have increased rents. I realized I had access to some original data from a previous project so I built a dashboard to help me visualize the changes and see for myself. you can filter by neighborhoods, bedrooms, original source where the rentals were posted, and select a timeframe. this is still a work in progress, so apologies in advance for any issues you encounter. I would love any…

Median rent by city and ZIP, bedroom breakdowns, and trend data. No account, no paywall, no upsell. Covers all 50 states, 4,000+ cities down to the ZIP code level with a Leaflet map across 7,700+ ZIP markers. What data would be most useful to add here?

Hi fellow job seekers! In a few hours this month's "Ask HN: Who is hiring?" thread will be posted. I've created a simple bookmarklet that removes jobs from the cities you are not interested in. You can find the bookmarklet & instructions here: https://github.com/janhancic/hnHiringFilter I hope somebody will find it helpful.

I came up with this idea when I was looking to move to London with a friend. I quickly learned how frustrating it is to trial-and-error housing options for days on end, just to be denied after days of searching due to some grotesque counteroffer. To add to this, finding properties that meet the budgets, commuting preferences and work locations of everyone in a group is a Sisyphean task - it often ends in failure, with somebody exceeding their original budget or somebody dropping out. To solve this I built a tool (https://closemove.com/) that: - lets you enter between 1-6…

I've been building a bunch of US geography tools/games/visualizations and thought folks on HN might like this one. There are also drive-time and bike-time tools available on the same page. For folks interested, all of the data comes from OpenStreetMap and the US Census at the moment - OSM for routing and points interest and the US Census for population data. Anonymous users can use it 5x/day. I put up a waitlist page to gauge interest in a paid version but there's no way for the public to make an account - feel free to bypass the limits in an incognito tab. The site is US-only…

Hi guys, wanted to show my (few) weekends project: http://wherehop.com A free app for you to basically see the best neighbourhoods to live in in many cities around the world. It uses data pulled from various sources to rank the best areas to live. Let me know your thoughts and how it can be improved.

Hi HN - Like many in tech, I've thought about relocating to different cities. But comparing salaries, income tax, housing costs, and overall cost of living is hard. It's hard to know where you'd actually save up more money. So I built a site to make it easier. It's my first HN project, hope you find it useful. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!
