24 alternatives to SecretMemoryLocker – File Encryption Without Static Passwords

I built SecretMemoryLocker (https://secretmemorylocker.com), a file encryption tool that generates keys dynamically from your answers to personal questions instead of using a static master password. This makes offline brute-force attacks much more difficult. Think of it as a password manager that meets mnemonic seed recovery, but without storing any sensitive keys on disk. Why? I kept losing master passwords and wanted a solution that wasn't tied to a single point of failure. I also wanted to create a "digital legacy" that my family could access only under specific conditions. The…

Passwords, accounts, and digital files get lost more often than we admit. Traditional password managers don’t solve the problem of organizing everything for the long term. SecretMemoryLocker is a secure archive that works like a Q&A system for your digital life. It helps you recover lost information, keep accounts organized, and also prepare for digital legacy if needed. I’d love to know: how do you currently handle digital data recovery and organization? I'm currently working on Bramble, an open source password manager with P2P cross-device sync. Initially I released the Chrome extension, but recently I also published the Android app and iOS is pending Apple's approval. Besides that, the latest version also includes passkey storage for all platforms! About Bramble: It aims to be as feature-rich as all popular and a replacement for cloud-based providers. I don't think we need to store our data in the cloud and be at the whims of companies raising their prices every year. There's always a breach and then we find out that some fields aren't…

I have written a passwords/secrets manager for my personal needs. Maybe it solves some of your problems too. It is written in Go and is a self-contained executable for a small web-app: https://github.com/jarmo/secrets-web There is also a CLI version if that is your taste: https://github.com/jarmo/secrets-cli To read about more technical details, look into the core repository at https://github.com/jarmo/secrets Any questions/comments/suggestions are welcome in here or via GitHub pull requests.

Hi! I got tired of setting up tools I can't explain to a team in a few words like sops or git-crypt, just to store few files with environment variables or secrets, so I built lockenv as a simple alternative. It's basically a password-protected vault file you commit to git. No gpg keys, no cloud, just lockenv init, set a password, and lock/unlock the secrets. This tool integrates with OS keyring, so you're not typing passwords constantly. Should work on Mac/Linux/Windows, but I tested it only on linux so far. I am not trying to replace any mature / robust solution, just…

Finally open sourced an internal tool we've been using for managing secrets. It's similar to SOPS, but more opinionated, easier to configure/use correctly, and produces nicer git diffs. It also supports one-way encryption, so you don't have to know the private key to add secrets.

This is a tool to manage encrypted local backups of secrets. The core idea is that it aims to be usable without depending on it, meaning that even if the software disappeared from the face of Earth tomorrow, your data would still be recoverable. It also integrates nicely with NixOS (which is what I use, though it does not require NixOS to be used). I have summed up a bit of explanation and some answers to reasonable questions in a blog post: https://baldino.dev/blog/secs-man/
