Secs-man, a secrets manager you can (not) rely on

This is a tool to manage encrypted local backups of secrets. The core idea is that it aims to be usable without depending on it, meaning that even if the software disappeared from the face of Earth tomorrow, your data would still be recoverable. It also integrates nicely with NixOS (which is what I use, though it does not require NixOS to be used). I have summed up a bit of explanation and some answers to reasonable questions in a blog post: https://baldino.dev/blog/secs-man/

In plain words

Secs-man is a secrets manager that stores encrypted backups locally and prioritizes user independence. Unlike traditional secrets managers, it's designed so users can recover their data even if the software is no longer maintained. It works on any system and offers special integration with NixOS. The tool emphasizes avoiding vendor lock-in through accessible data formats and recovery methods.

A command-line tool for securely backing up, restoring, and verifying secrets using interoperable standards like age encryption and coreutils, ensuring long-term accessibility without vendor lock-in - Fran314/secrets-manager-rs

secs-man is a tool for managing backups of secrets with tool-independence in mind: if you encrypt your secrets with this software, you should be able to decrypt and restore them without this software. Even if secs-man disappears from the face of the Earth, your data is still accessible. secs-man can be used to manage secrets of local and remote machines, and is ideal for creating local-only backups for data that is too sensitive to be backed up somewhere in the cloud. You should not depend on any specific software for backing-up your extremely important data. Any software that forces you to remain in its ecosystem after use (such as: "if you encrypt it with this software, you can only…from github.com

Finally open sourced an internal tool we've been using for managing secrets. It's similar to SOPS, but more opinionated, easier to configure/use correctly, and produces nicer git diffs. It also supports one-way encryption, so you don't have to know the private key to add secrets.

I have written a passwords/secrets manager for my personal needs. Maybe it solves some of your problems too. It is written in Go and is a self-contained executable for a small web-app: https://github.com/jarmo/secrets-web There is also a CLI version if that is your taste: https://github.com/jarmo/secrets-cli To read about more technical details, look into the core repository at https://github.com/jarmo/secrets Any questions/comments/suggestions are welcome in here or via GitHub pull requests.

The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate). Happy to discuss any questions here!
