Hey fellow HN-ers, I'd like to ask HN about my latest startup: SocialFolders. We take a Dropbox-like approach to managing your content on your social networks by mirroring all the content you have on these networks in folders on your computer. Moving this content around, between folders or between services, is mirrored in the all-mighty "cloud" (ugh, I hate this word). We'd love to know what you think. We think our approach solves the problem of managing content at scale. We put together a quick 2'30 screencast to show HN how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s2TFsVezZQ If you want…

Hey HN, long time lurker first time poster. I built a social network called PIECES. After building a private blog last year after I had to get off IG and Substack, I decided to productize it. It's here now. It has a dedicated web experience + iOS/Android. Would love if you tried it out!

Hey everyone! We would like feedback on our Startup Weekend project, DropSend ( Temporary name ) Here's our pitch: We want to change the way you send files to your friends or contact. Because let's face it,sending a file by email feels really clunky and is limited by the size, Instant Messenger is slow and you need to be online and finally Dropbox while perfect for storing files, doesn't really fit this use case. With our desktop application, one click (and we mean it), is all it takes to send a file. Imagine dragging a file of any size to one edge of your computer screen and see a dock…

Hi HN :) really excited to share this with you. The one thing AI reliably does is generate noise. Half the tools I see launch are just machines for producing more noise across more channels. And people are starting to see this in the form of emails in their inboxes as spam filters are struggling. There used to be a useful signal in email: the effort a sender put into customizing a message was a rough proxy for how relevant it actually was. AI killed that. Now it's customized slop with the appearance of effort with none of the cost. It is painful that the open internet / open channels…

I have been building a twitter alternative. The central core features are in place. Running on postgres with uuid6 ID's seems to have turned out really nicely for this data type. It's got the feed and reposts and following users and all the main things that are central to a twitter-like feed. Still pretty rough around the edges. I'm still finding little off quirks all the time to clean up. It's been a fun project though and I plan to continue working on this as I have about a dozen ideas I want to add to it.

I’ve started working on a new startup called Thoughtful Post (https://thoughtfulpost.com) It’s a useful and fun-to-use app that will help you organize and remember all of your friend’s birthdays/weddings/anniversaries and help you find interesting and new gifts to get them based on their likes and dislikes! There are collaboration features and surveys you can use to farm your friends likes/dislikes and work together with friends to pick out gifts for people. All of the functionality is in the mobile app:…

Hi guys, We have just built Ultimategiftlists.com My girlfriend keeps asking me what I want for Christmas. I also need to buy stuff for my nephew. So I wrote a list of stuff out for my girlfriend and sent her an email of links showing her the stuff I wanted. I found that my brother did exactly the same to show me what I should get my nephews. There had to be a better way to do this. Amazon wishlist exists but it doesn't do it as effectively as I wanted. Therefore my mate and I built our new site - www.ultimategiftlists.com - it's hopefully very simple to use and has a really cool feature…

Hi Everyone, Today I'm proud to announce the upcoming launch of Postcard. You can visit the launch page here - http://www.postcardsocial.net However, since this is Hacker News, I thought the community might be more interested in my blog entry which explains in detail why the project should be of interest to developers including information about the open API Protocol it will adhere to. You can read the blog entry here - http://blog.postcardsocial.net/introducing-postcard/ Feedback is welcome and appreciated. I'm actively looking for beta testers and you can sign…

Hey everyone! Last weekend I participated in a Startup Weekend (Paris, France) with a friend where we pitched a simple idea. We wanted to create a cross platform application with the easiest file-sharing experience. Drag and drop the files on the avatar of the person you want to send them to. and voila, the files are sent. During the weekend I posted on HN to get some feedback on our project and was happy to see we got some awesome feedback ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3780777 ). The testing page ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/149780/Dropsend%20beta.jpg ) got more than 1200 Unique…

Hello. :) I've noticed for the last few years it feels like everyone has been saying the same thing, that social media got baaad, timelines feel hostile, nothing you see is actually from people you chose to follow, and every platform seems optimized for outrage, screenshots, and engagement bait rather than the original microblog ideas of the early 2010s I miss the 2010 social styles, where you have to share your @name with a friend IRL because search wasn't really search... A place where you followed people, saw what they wrote, stumbled into interesting discussions, and hashtags meant…

I've tracked the top 3000 subscribed (and some subreddits that I visit frequently) subreddit's active user over time, so you know when to post to get the most feedback! I come from a nodejs background, and this is the first time coding with Go, so the structures might not be standard. But feel free to give me any feedbacks!

Hi Everyone, (I know this is a repost, but I had some dns issues with my last submission) I created this as a small project last weekend (started on _whyday) just to flex some ruby muscle, learn some stuff about sinatra, oauth and the twitter api and also get into the spirit of the day. So what it does is use your twitter followers and random people on twitter to answer your questions (bearing in mind that the syntax has to result in a yes or no question). So In effect they may or may-not know anything about you, so you just vote yes or no (kinda like facemash or hot-or-not but for…

Hi HN! I'm quite new to HN so I'm sorry if I don't do a well built post (in terms of form) as you are probably used to. My name is João Romão, from Portugal, and I'm one of the co-founders of Wishareit, a place for collaborative gifting with your friends and family. Everybody loves gifts but sometimes finding a gift is a really hard task. And the consequence is painful: you get ugly clothes, bad books and.. cactuses. We reached out and discovered that 40% of all gifts in the US in 2011 were considered to be crap and that 83% of people had trouble when looking for a gift. That's a really…

We are looking to get feedback for http://www.samefeather.com. We have tried this with friends and family but want to get some critical feedback (note to self: do this sooner next time). SameFeather is a location based network of people with similar interests. Our emphasis is offline. We provide a way for people to find others in their vicinity that share their interests and meet them offline. We are trying to stay away from calling it a social network because that seems to scare away a lot of people. The differentiating factor from whats already out there is we focus on individuals and…

For fun this Valentine's Day, a couple buddies and I decided to play around with the idea of digital Valentines. We cranked out the project in the month of January as a "nights & weekends" project. We'd love any feedback in general! Our next step is to figure a way to seed this in key communities, to see if it has any chance of taking off. The URL is www.1millionvalentines.com (or www.1MVS.com). Thanks!
