Startup Wishareit – Trying to solve the bad gifts issue
Hi HN! I'm quite new to HN so I'm sorry if I don't do a well built post (in terms of form) as you are probably used to. My name is João Romão, from Portugal, and I'm one of the co-founders of Wishareit, a place for collaborative gifting with your friends and family. Everybody loves gifts but sometimes finding a gift is a really hard task. And the consequence is painful: you get ugly clothes, bad books and.. cactuses. We reached out and discovered that 40% of all gifts in the US in 2011 were considered to be crap and that 83% of people had trouble when looking for a gift. That's a really…
What it does
In the maker’s words, at launch
That's a really annoying issue. Our vision is to transform the way gifting is done, turning it into a really collaborative experience. We started off with Wishareit, a collaborative gifting platform where you have socially curated wishlists and where you can find, recommend, give and receive the perfect gifts with your friends and family. We're still in open beta, trying to understand the space and the user behavior. I'd like to get some feedback on the general feeling for Wishareit design and usability and some inputs on what may be improved (i'm sure there are some relevant advice you can provide me). I hope you can help us grow and improve as a product and as a team! On other subject, we will probably pitch at SXSW in Austin, Texas so feel free to tweet (@joaoromaolx) or send me a message on Angel List (https://angel.co/joaoromao) and we'll have a chat there! You can visit Wishareit on www.wishareit.com (I'm sorry if you don't feel confortable with facebook login - contact me and I'll give you a test account so you can experience the website). All the best for you guys, João Romão CEO, Wishareit

Hey there, First time posting on HN. We're looking for feedback from parents. We're 2 dads who started working on Dadditude in the midst of covid lockdowns last year. Being a dad can be a long, emotional, draining, and lonely journey. Through our research we learned that dads want to improve their parenting but are too shy to ask for help, and are tired of reading content online written for mums. We set out to fix that and create a platform that would help dads feel seen, validated, and supported. By helping dads, we hope to support moms and partners too, because all parents deserve more…
- ICI created a site to help HN users give the perfect Christmas gift2022 · thealmostperfectgift.blogspot.com · ▲7
The idea of creating this site came to me when I was thinking of gifts to get family and friends for Christmas after a very exhausting work week. Getting Christmas gifts or gifts in general can be time consuming and mind draining if you are the type of person that likes to give thoughtful gifts and does not like to repeat gifts. I decided to compile data of key points like gender, age group, hobbies, favorite things, favorite sports etc of the person receiving the gift, so as to suggest several gifts the receiver is most likely to love. Since I wanted to share this with others that might…
- OWOur week long project - trying to do the wishlist better2012 · ▲17
Hi guys, We have just built Ultimategiftlists.com My girlfriend keeps asking me what I want for Christmas. I also need to buy stuff for my nephew. So I wrote a list of stuff out for my girlfriend and sent her an email of links showing her the stuff I wanted. I found that my brother did exactly the same to show me what I should get my nephews. There had to be a better way to do this. Amazon wishlist exists but it doesn't do it as effectively as I wanted. Therefore my mate and I built our new site - www.ultimategiftlists.com - it's hopefully very simple to use and has a really cool feature…
- FOFinally opening signup on my education for business startup, Learndot2013 · ▲55
HN, I've been mostly lurking, semi-active on HN for over 4 years. For most of that time, I've been working on my startup, Learndot. I have always wanted to do a "Show HN" post, but I never thought it was ready. We've now finally launched web signup and using a freemium business model. I feel I can now post and offer something to the community (a new app to try out) and hopefully get good quality feedback. Here's the site: http://www.learndot.com Would appreciate any or all thoughts: From pricing/positioning, to design/performance. The app is written in Sproutcore and backed by an API written…
- HNhackerByte - Newsletter for Start-up Folks (A weekend Project)2011 · ▲21
Friends, Romans, HNers! Link: http://hackerbyte.com This is my first “weekend project” and it was really fun doing it. The sleepless weekends nights when all my friends were our partying or something we (me and two friends) were busy creating ‘hackerByte’ - a weekly newsletter to share inspiration with start-up people. Nothing fancy - just we’d like to share some really nice stuff we read and some news with you, every week. We know that newsletters like these already exist so why one more? Because we are not really satisfied with what they are doing and here is our version of the wheel. We…
- FCFounder Chats – Connecting Hacker News Founder Community2019 · ▲37
Hi HN community! A huge number of startup founders are reading Hacker News, but it's still very hard to make new personal connections here and help each other with product building, growth, or fundraising. As an experiment to make HN founder community more connected, I've created a system of chat groups, organized by location, industry sector, and priority tasks. We were testing it out for the last couple of weeks, starting with 200+ YCombinator alum companies. Now already have 1000+ startups there, and 80+ venture investors have joined to connect with founders early. Many pitch practices…

Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…
