Products that do what SolarStorm – Visualising space weather effects on the power grid does

Hi HN, I wanted to share my team's side project! We like to do R&D projects and investigate new areas, interesting problems, etc. This application visualises the dynamic interplay between space weather and our terrestrial power grid, focusing on Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) across the UK. By visualising the magnetic field, induced electric field, and resulting GICs, users can identify vulnerable areas of the UK power network and assess the potential for operational disruptions during geomagnetic storms. We would love to get some feedback and expand this to cover more power grids…

Plug-in solar panels (no electrician needed) have just become legal in the UK and will go on sale soon. Helios estimates how much electricity a typical installation could generate at a given address and what that's worth against your tariff. It uses UK government LIDAR data to reflect the actual skyline, so it knows whether there's a building or a hill blocking the sun. Caveats: - Outside LIDAR coverage (most of Scotland and Wales) it falls back to a synthetic horizon (less accurate). - Trees and recent developments (post-2022 or so) may not be in the data, and some address placements could…

I had been wanting to try experimenting with nowcasting since the death of Dark Sky and finally got around to it. This application essentially became a playground for me to experiment with various weather datasets and geospatial visualizations. Some interesting concepts that came from it: The nowcast is using pySTEPS optical flow under the hood: https://pysteps.readthedocs.io/en/latest/auto_examples/plot_.... This library is super cool. It bugged me that every radar visualization just gave you choppy snapshots in time, so I spent some time working on building a…

Hi HN, I am co-founder of Kickstage, a software company specializing in solutions for the electrical industry and lately grid operators. We are hiring engineers from different backgrounds, a lot of them software developers with limited experience in the sectors. Deep domain knowledge is key in our industry however, so we are constantly teaching the basics of power flow analysis, active vs reactive power, transmission line properties etc. With Jupyter notebooks and the Python console only, that's a tedious task and hardly ever led to a deep understanding of the topics. So we built BambooGrid:…
