24 alternatives to The Missing Open Source Package Manager for Kubernetes Beyond Helm
Hi, we are a small team from Vienna and today released our first version of a Package Manager similar to apt, Homebrew, or Chocolatey, but specifically tailored for Kubernetes environments and cloud-native software. Originally, we wanted to contribute to the Kubernetes ecosystem with a different idea; however, after talking to the community, we uncovered that package management is an even bigger problem at the moment. We are now looking for as much feedback as possible, so we would really appreciate it if you could check it out and let us know what you think! Thanks!

Hello HN, we're Philip and Louis from Glasskube (https://github.com/glasskube/glasskube). We're working on an open-source package manager for Kubernetes. It's an alternative to tools like Helm or Kustomize, primarily focused on making deploying, updating, and configuring Kubernetes packages simpler and a lot faster. Here is a demo video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIeTHGWsG2c#t=17s) with quick start instructions. Most developers working with Kubernetes use Helm, an open-source tool created during a hackathon nine years ago. However, with the rapid…

Hi folks, We worked hard over the last couple of weeks to build a new package manager for Kubernetes that makes it super simple to install packages and solves some of the shortcomings of helm (dependency management, multi namespace installations, a GUI and CLI as first class interfaces). We just released our source code on GitHub: https://github.com/glasskube/glasskube/ and looking for feedback!

Hey there! We are excited to introduce the Beta version of Glasskube, the Open Source next generation Package Manager for Kubernetes. If you're familiar with working in a Kubernetes environment, you understand the challenges of managing third-party packages crucial for running your clusters and the applications within them. Current installation methods often lack simple package configuration, are difficult to upgrade, and don't support multi-namespace dependencies. We're eager to get Glasskube into your hands and hear your thoughts. The best way to get started is by visiting our GitHub…

Hello HN, we’re Philip Louis from Glasskube (https://github.com/glasskube/glasskube). We are working on a package manager for Kubernetes to simplify the packaging of complex applications with multiple dependencies, ensuring they are installed and kept up-to-date across multiple Kubernetes clusters. Nowadays, it is best practice to use Git as a revision control system for your Kubernetes configurations. Update automation workflows like Renovate or Dependabot can create pull requests for new versions of Docker images and Helm charts, but ensuring these new package versions…

This is a project I've wanted to write for a long time now. I really love the ideas from Nix and I still have a ton of respect for the project, but Nix-the-language never felt intuitive to me and I wanted something with more approachable tooling (although this was circa 2016, so I'm sure Nix has improved a lot since then too-- that was before Flakes were around!) Anyway, I started on the current iteration of Brioche about 6 months ago, and I finally cut an initial release. I'd still consider this a "technical preview" version (performance especially is pretty painful, so that'll be a focus…

Hey HN :) I just saw the post about Glasskube - an open source package manager for kubernetes [1] and would like to throw package-operator in the ring for y'all to look at and get some feedback on it. Disclaimer up front: I'm an engineer working on package-operator as part of my SRE work in Red Hat's service delivery org. Opinions are my own, though. :) Package-Operator is a multi component ecosystem to tackle the package management story for kubernetes in a slighly novel- (and not so novel- when compared with OLM [2]) way: - `package-operator-manager` is an actual operator running inside…

Devbox is a command-line tool that lets you easily create isolated shells and containers. You start by defining the list of packages required by your development environment, and devbox uses that definition to create an isolated environment just for your application. In practice, Devbox works similar to a package manager like yarn – except the packages it manages are at the operating-system level (the sort of thing you would normally install with brew or apt-get). Hello! This is Edgar and Robbie and we built nix-snapshotter. nix-snapshotter brings native understanding of Nix packages to containerd. We built this because Nix is a great fit for making efficient containers. They don't need an OS because Nix captures all dependencies exactly. However, the current process of creating Nix images is subpar because one needs to transform Nix packages into a format that container runtimes understand. Using nix-snapshotter, instead of downloading image layers, packages come directly from the Nix store. Packages can be fetched from a binary cache or built on the…

Kerno▲132Hey HN! Anibal, Sean, Vlad, Maxi and Karim here we're the co-founders of Kerno (https://www.kerno.io/). We're building a zero-hassle tool to help developers monitor and troubleshoot their services in a way that makes sense. No complex rollouts, no custom infra, no tons of instrumentation, no sidecars… none of that! Just a minimum effort, out-of-the box, highly contextualized and interactive experience so you and your team can focus on shipping! We basically scan your cluster resources, build usable abstractions on top of all the kubernetes craziness, identify monitor your…

Hey HN, I'm Brandon, a solo dev, and I built KubeForge - a visual editor for Kubernetes deployments that helps you build and validate YAML configs. Origin Story: Over the past couple weeks, I got fed up manually writing Kubernetes YAMLs, especially when working with nested structures like containers, env, and volumeMounts. Even small typos or misaligned fields added lost time to broken deploys. So I started hacking together a tool to visualize the structure of Kubernetes objects based on the OpenAPI schema. That prototype quickly turned into a full manifest builder. What KubeForge does: -…

A large part of our (Real Kinetic's) business is helping organizations implement platform engineering, but we've found the existing tooling to be lacking. For IaC, Terraform state becomes a pain because TF treats infrastructure as "one-shot" commands. The Kubernetes controller model provides a nicer approach to managing infrastructure, but the tooling here is also lacking. For configuration management, Helm just doesn't really scale with complexity, nor does Kustomize. For resource orchestration, Crossplane is a step in the right direction but still has challenges and limitations. As a…
