Hello HN! I built my first iOS app, Bebop. I made it as a companion to file-based desktop apps like Obsidian and NVAlt, and also as a way to learn iOS development and try out GPT/Copilot. Notes are saved as plain-text files in the iCloud/Dropbox folder of your choice. I felt that most notes apps out there had too many organizational features (better suited for larger screens) that got in the way of capture (my prime mobile use case). So I wanted this app to be obsessive about capturing ideas quick. For instance, the “Flashback” button lets you cycle through recent notes with a single tap, without having to navigate away from the compose interface. The app’s free and unlimited for everyone. No accounts, logins, tracking, or subscriptions. A one-time in app “Pro” purchase will get you color themes and some nice-to-have features, but is basically just a tip to say thanks and support future development. Would love to hear your thoughts, and figure out how I can make Bebop better fit your individual workflows so it’s useful to others besides myself. I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it.
