Bitdowntoc

Effortless Markdown ToC – Idempotent, Universal, Reliable.

Bitdowntoc launched on February 4, 2025 with 9 votes, #2,586 of 5,999 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.

What it does

BitdownToC creates and manages tables of contents for markdown files with idempotence. Ships with presets for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, dev.to, and more. Available as a web app and as a CLI for ultimate flexibility.

A universal Markdown TOC generator with presets for GitHub, BitBucket Server, Gitlab, dev.to, and more! Open-source, free, no trackers.

This page uses BitDownToc to insert Table of Contents (TOC) in your markdown. BitDownToc comes with pre-defined profiles. The important options for each are: If your markdown renderer is not on the list, turn on generate anchors (Generic profile) to generate HTML elements such as <a name="..."> at the top of each heading to support navigation. This trick works anywhere, as long as HTML is supported. Use the [TOC] marker to control where the TOC will appear. Any header(s) above it won't be part of it. BitDownToc adds comments by default, so you can update the TOC anytime with this tool. BitDownToc is free and open-source. It also works in the terminal ! Hi HN, This is a TUI app which displays interactive Markdown documents. Interactive in the sense that you can scroll code fences &#x2F; tables &#x2F; and click links. There's a Table of Contents extracted from the MD, and a very rudimentary browser like forward + back. I'm thinking it could be the starting point for a variety of hypertext like applications in the terminal. Very much a work in progress.

`makedown` allows you to organise your shell scripts in one or several markdown files, by mix and matching different scripting languages for various commands and needs. zsh&#x2F;bash&#x2F;sh, python, javascript or anything else available on your system. Handy for replacing one-line-based package.json scripts or shell-based Makefiles. One can also write documentation and explanations to various commands in the same `.md` file. Most editors highlight correctly most languages in the markdown code blocks, even when you use several scripting languages. Here is a demo .md file…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I was at FB&#x2F;Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler&#x2F;runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko&#x2F;plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…
