Daxo OS
Rust kernel that boots on metal and runs user code in Ring 3
Daxo OS launched on August 14, 2026 with 2 votes, #5,788 of 23,274 launches that month.
What it does
An experimental x86_64 kernel built completely from scratch in Rust. Designed as a clean, mostly-safe systems programming playground, it boots natively via UEFI, sets up 4-level paging, runs user-space applications in Ring 3 via GDT/TSS switching, manages a cooperative async task executor, and includes a custom fixed-size heap allocator alongside an ATA PIO driver.
Building Daxo OS: A custom bare-metal x86_64 microkernel written from scratch in Rust. UEFI boot, Ring 3 isolation, FAT like file system, cooperative async multitasking. - daxo-developer/daxo_os
A custom x86_64 kernel written in Rust, heavily based on the excellent “Writing an OS in Rust” series by Philipp Oppermann. This project started as a learning exercise following that tutorial, and has since been extended with custom features (ATA PIO driver, FAT-like file system, cooperative multitasking, user-mode switching, syscall stubs, etc.). Currently boots via UEFI, sets up 4-level paging, and can execute user-mode code in Ring 3. Status: Active development (v0.3.0). Learning project for low-level x86_64 architecture and bare-metal Rust. cargo run -Zjson-target-spec Build a standalone bootable image cargo install bootimage cargo bootimage Output:…from github.com

Munal OS: a graphical experimental OS with WASM sandboxing2025 · github.com · ▲313Hello HN! Showing off the first version of Munal OS, an experimental operating system I have been writing in Rust on and off for the past few years. https://github.com/Askannz/munal-os It's an unikernel design that is compiled as a single EFI binary and does not use virtual address spaces for process isolation. Instead, applications are compiled to WASM and run inside of an embedded WASM engine. Other features: * Fully graphical interface in HD resolution with mouse and keyboard support * Desktop shell with window manager and contextual radial menus * PCI and VirtIO…
SpecOS – A 64 bit OS kernel from scratch2024 · github.com · ▲45I've been working on this for ~3 months now, with pretty slow progress to be honest. So far I've got an ATA PIO mode hard disk driver, a FAT32 file system, a real time clock driver, and of course the essentials (interrupts, keyboard, pixel graphics). Kernel panics also cause a blue screen of death xD. It uses a bitmap physical memory allocator, and I'm fixing some issues with paging at the moment as a work towards running userspace applications. I'd be interested to see your thoughts on it :D

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Clipto MCP▲655Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
