Drakkar.one – Google Maps embed replacement, no API keys, GDPR-ready
Embeddable map widget for business websites. One script tag, no Google account, no cookies. OpenStreetMap tiles served as Protomaps PMTiles from Cloudflare R2. The whole serving layer runs on edge with no tile server. Infrastructure cost is ~€7/month regardless of traffic because R2 has no egress fees. Built it because Google Maps embeds in Europe are a GDPR headache (cookies, third-party domains, consent barriers), and they show your competitors on your own website.

Hi HN, After 9 years of running my own OpenStreetMap tile server infra for MapHub (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11389989), I've open-sourced it and launched OpenFreeMap. You can either self-host or use our public instance. Everything is open-source, including the full production setup — there’s no 'open-core' model here. Check out the repo (https://github.com/hyperknot/openfreemap). The map data comes from OpenStreetMap. I also provide weekly full planet downloads both in Btrfs and MBTiles formats. I aim to cover the running costs of the public…

Over the past week I built a project to let people self-host an entire maps stack so they don't have to send data to the big G. Right now it includes a base map, geocoder and directions server. Currently only bicycle directions are supported, and I'm only hosting tiles for Seattle because I'm unemployed and can't afford to host data for the whole planet. Check it out! https://maps.ellenhp.me/ https://github.com/ellenhp/headway Ultimately I'd like to really focus on transit routing (not implemented) but I'll probably throw a driving mode in there too.

OGMAP 2025 · ogmap.com · ▲7Hey everyone I’ve been hacking on a project → [OGMAP](https://ogmap.com). It’s a *vector tiles API (PBF)* with simple prepaid pricing: - $10 = 1,000,000 tiles - 250k free on sign-up - Auto-buy with Stripe, with safety limits - Served worldwide via Cloudflare CDN We don’t try to compete with Mapbox feature-wise. It’s literally just fast, low-cost tiles + some basic styles for MapLibre. Why I built it: I wanted to start a web project and realized if it got even a bit popular (before monetization), I couldn’t afford the usual map APIs. Existing services often cost 3–10× more. So I…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
