24 alternatives to Drakkar.one – Google Maps embed replacement, no API keys, GDPR-ready

Embeddable map widget for business websites. One script tag, no Google account, no cookies. OpenStreetMap tiles served as Protomaps PMTiles from Cloudflare R2. The whole serving layer runs on edge with no tile server. Infrastructure cost is ~€7/month regardless of traffic because R2 has no egress fees. Built it because Google Maps embeds in Europe are a GDPR headache (cookies, third-party domains, consent barriers), and they show your competitors on your own website.

Hi HN, After 9 years of running my own OpenStreetMap tile server infra for MapHub (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11389989), I've open-sourced it and launched OpenFreeMap. You can either self-host or use our public instance. Everything is open-source, including the full production setup — there’s no 'open-core' model here. Check out the repo (https://github.com/hyperknot/openfreemap). The map data comes from OpenStreetMap. I also provide weekly full planet downloads both in Btrfs and MBTiles formats. I aim to cover the running costs of the public…

Over the past week I built a project to let people self-host an entire maps stack so they don't have to send data to the big G. Right now it includes a base map, geocoder and directions server. Currently only bicycle directions are supported, and I'm only hosting tiles for Seattle because I'm unemployed and can't afford to host data for the whole planet. Check it out! https://maps.ellenhp.me/ https://github.com/ellenhp/headway Ultimately I'd like to really focus on transit routing (not implemented) but I'll probably throw a driving mode in there too.

Hey everyone I’ve been hacking on a project → [OGMAP](https://ogmap.com). It’s a *vector tiles API (PBF)* with simple prepaid pricing: - $10 = 1,000,000 tiles - 250k free on sign-up - Auto-buy with Stripe, with safety limits - Served worldwide via Cloudflare CDN We don’t try to compete with Mapbox feature-wise. It’s literally just fast, low-cost tiles + some basic styles for MapLibre. Why I built it: I wanted to start a web project and realized if it got even a bit popular (before monetization), I couldn’t afford the usual map APIs. Existing services often cost 3–10× more. So I…

Hi all, This project release is a long time coming. It was a big uphill battle, and by far my largest endeavor so far. I built it for Sandstorm because I believe in Sandstorm's model, and I wanted to show that there's still life and potential in it. If you're inspired, joining our OpenCollective would be really helpful: https://opencollective.com/sandstormcommunity (keeping in mind that Sandstorm has now moved from its original leadership to a community project https://sandstorm.org/news/2023-11-03-from-io-to-org). We built Maptoolkit.org - a free, production-grade vector maps service built on OpenStreetMap and MapLibre. Map rendering and tile hosting have historically been either expensive (Google, Mapbox) or complex to maintain yourself. (Plus: Their maps are car-focused.) Our maps feature max data zoom 15, global hill-shading, 3D terrain, contour lines, water depths, and specialized styles (like Hiking, Cycling, Winter). No sign up or API keys required. You can use it like this: ``` const map = new maplibregl.Map({ container: 'map', style: 'https://styles.maptoolkit.org/summer.json',…

Technologies used: Leaflet (frontend) Turf (Geojson generation and Voronoi generation) I noticed that my neighborhood is all Lawsons, so I got the location of all Conbinis and ran some basic analysis to see if these pockets of brand territory are common. I haven't worked much with web frontends before, so feedback is welcomed. I also have some ideas to maybe expand upon, like making the territory calculations based on streets and other geographical features rather than just beeline distance. The site isn't tested too much on mobile yet, but should be ok. Currently the frontend code and…

Hello HN! I’m excited to share this open-source community mashup showing the power and possibility of combining 3D Gaussian splat scans with traditional mesh-based 3D tiles maps in the browser. As you've probably seen on HN a bunch lately, Gaussian splats are a new method to allow custom 3D scans of scenes and objects [1] and Google Maps 3D Tiles API are the same 3D buildings and street views your familiar with in Google Earth or Google Maps, and recently they’ve been made available for inclusion in web apps. Combining splats + 3d map mixes highly detailed real-world custom micro-scans with…
