What it does

GlimpseWords is a Mac menu bar app that helps you learn vocabulary effortlessly while you work. Wunderbar – Learn language while working on your Mac2024 · ▲60

Hey everyone, I've been living in Germany for a while now and struggling to pick up German. Even though I finished a B1 level language course, remembering all the common German words has been tough. I've tried a bunch of apps, but couldn't stick to any of them. Last month, I had an idea. I thought, what if I could see a German word and its meaning on the Menu Bar of my Mac? That way, I could learn new words while working without needing to set aside dedicated time. The app uses a spaced-repetition algorithm, so you'll see the same word multiple times until you've got it down. And even after…

    Personalized Duolingo (kind of) for vocabulary building2025 · github.com · ▲161

Hi! Wanted to share the project I really wanted to have. TLDR; this app lets you create your own list of words and you get a Duolingo-like experience (kind of, still needs a lot of features) practicing those words in their context. My English is not the best but not the worst either. But I realized I can't boost it up after a certain level! In my belief, in order to truly learn a language, you need to be exposed to that language often. Vocabulary is the key factor here if you really want to improve in any language. My experience is that when I read a book to improve my English vocabulary, I…

Byword for Mac, a simple text editor with Markdown support2011 · ▲14

Byword 1.2 added Markdown editing, previewing and exporting to HTML. While version 1.0 was positioned as a distraction-free/minimalist text editor, we now feel the need to detract a bit from that space. We are currently investing a lot more in the efficiency and needs of web writers, listening carefully and working hard to put out new updates (3 Mac App Store updates in less than 2 months--not recommended). If you feel like trying the app, we are specifically looking for feedback on what Byword can do to help creative/web writers. There's a free trial for download at http://bywordapp.com…

  • Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

With social media and now AI, its important to keep the indie web alive. There are many people who write frequently. Blogosphere tries to highlight them by fetching the recent posts from personal blogs across many categories. There are two versions: Minimal (HN-inspired, fast, static): https://text.blogosphere.app/ Non-minimal: https://blogosphere.app/ If you don't find your blog (or your favorite ones), please add them. I will review and approve it.
