In plain words

GPU text rendering with vector textures is a method for displaying high-quality text on graphics processors. It delivers antialiased, pixel-accurate results at any zoom level without requiring CPU processing during rendering. Unlike traditional font atlas approaches that store pre-rendered glyphs at fixed sizes and become blurry when enlarged, this technique uses vector textures to maintain sharp text quality across all scales. The method was presented by Will Dobbie as a technical approach to solving common limitations in GPU-based text rendering.

From the sources

This post presents a new method for high quality text rendering using the GPU. Unlike existing methods it provides antialiased pixel accurate results at all scales with no runtime CPU cost. The standard way of rendering text with the GPU is to use a font atlas. Each glyph is rendered on the CPU and packed into a texture. Here’s an example from freetype-gl: The drawback with atlases is that you can’t store every glyph at every possible size or you’ll run out of memory. As you zoom in the glyphs will start to get blurry due to interpolation. One solution to this is to store the glyphs as a signed distance field. This became popular after a 2007 paper by Chris Green of Valve…from wdobbie.com

TLDR: Click the link to see some cool visualizations, refresh a few times for random examples, and try editing some of the code yourself. This is a small weekend project of mine inspired by shadertoy.com It's a static single-page site hosted on GitHub pages so the website design is pretty barebones. I'm not a web developer so I mainly wanted to create a Cool Thing with my free time and not have to learn tons of front-end to do it. I'd love to hear what people think about it and please post or send me any shaders you make! You can use the link button in the bottom right to share. I hope that…
