Hlas-1: open-weight 3B params TTS with frontier performance

We’re on a journey to advance and democratize artificial intelligence through open source and open science.

What it does

Hlas (Czech for voice ) is a 3.5B-parameter expressive text-to-speech model with zero-shot voice cloning and inline performance tags. At a size that runs on a single 12 GB GPU, it covers a wide range of emotions, deliveries, pauses and non-verbal sounds with studio-quality output, in English, Mandarin and a broad set of further languages. The text carries both the words and the performance: emotions, deliveries, pauses, laughs, sighs, accents and characters are written in square brackets at the position where they should happen. The response streams mono 24 kHz signed 16-bit PCM. A 12 GB GPU runs eager mode, a 24 GB GPU the --fast-all path. A tag applies from the position where it appears.…from huggingface.co

I spent a lot of time and money on this rather big side project of mine that attempts to replicate the mechanistic interpretability research on proprietary LLMs that was quite popular this year and produced great research papers by Anthropic [1], OpenAI [2] and Deepmind [3]. I am quite proud of this project and since I consider myself the target audience for HackerNews did I think that maybe some of you would appreciate this open research replication as well. Happy to answer any questions or face any feedback. Cheers [1]…

Long-simmering side project that is finally ready to see the light. HAMTs are a cool persistent data structure and implementing one has been a lot of fun. Beyond the code, there is likely some value in the extensive and largely complete implementation docs; basic benchmarks are linked in the README, too. Kind of aiming to be "the libavl for HAMTs". That is obviously a high and aspirational bar but a distinct possibility if it stirs up a little interest and/or contribution. Anyways, it's time for this to go out, collect feedback and maybe even some use outside of toy projects. Let me…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
