LANCommander v1.0.0 – Self-host your digital game library
Last week I launched LANCommander v1.0.0 after about two years of development. LANCommander is an open source digital game distribution platform. In essence, it's a ways to self-host your own game library ala Steam, GOG, Epic, etc. It originally started as a project to automate the distribution of games at a LAN party I co-host. We have about 24 peak players each session and there came a point where trying to get games to work ate more time than we actually spent playing games. The natural conclustion was to write my own launcher and server to distribute files across the network. v1.0.0…

The natural conclustion was to write my own launcher and server to distribute files across the network. v1.0.0 represents the first version where the base features feel complete. Features include game installing, "cloud" saves, key allocation, and dedicated server management. I've been eating my own dog food along the way and really feel like I've been able to (mostly) take back control of my game library. After 14 months and probably over 1,000 hours, I'm finally at the point where I feel like I can show off my side project, LANCommander. As the title states, LANCommander is a self-hosted, open source digital distribution platform for PC games. The project started to solve the woes of a regular in-person LAN party that I participate in with some friends. I got tired of spending more time solving technical issues than playing games, so I decided to create a tool to help automate the process. The server application is built as a .NET 8 Blazor application. Database access is implemented with…

A few months ago (82 days to be exact!) I posted a link on HN to my game, Meatshields. A bunch of you commented and played my game and gave me some wonderful feedback. Over the last few months I've been playing with many of you and implementing the best of everybody's suggestions. So, thank you, HN for all your help! I feel this is an extreme overhaul I couldn't have done without your input. Since then, I have: Dramatically improved our hosting platform (So it HOPEFULLY won't go down this time (oops.)), Added two new units, Rebalanced all existing units, Added many more maps, Improved the…

Hello HN, I have started FBG some years ago when I moved to the Bay Area and could not find a simple, cross-platform, no-registration way to play board games with my friends back in my home country. I also wanted to make it simple to create multiplayer board games online for developers in their free time. Shortly after, I found out about boardgame.io with similar goals and decided to join forces with them. It became the engine of our board games, and we focused on publishing/serving them. To be fair with everyone and inspired by Wikipedia, we made the project a non-profit with GPLv3…
