My imageless one page website, thanks to CSS3
I recently rebuilt my website as digital business card, which serves a simple purpose: Say hello, then point people in the direction of the places I inhabit on the web. At the time I was playing around with the HTML5 boilerplate and Google web fonts, and it inspried me to try to implement the logos of the sites I link to with CSS rather than images. You can view it at: http://colin-gourlay.com/ You'll need a modern browser to see the effects in action, but if you're still using IE6/7/8,I hope you can still appreciate the degraded appearance! Is it effective? Are CSS + custom fonts not quite…
What it does
In the maker’s words, at launch

Is it effective? Are CSS + custom fonts not quite up to the challenge of simple image replacement like this? Am I just not doing it effectively? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've tried to make it as light as possible. It's only tested with Firefox and Chrome, however I intend to test it in IE down to 9. What would you change? What would you add? Any feedback or pull request is greatly welcome! MIT Licensed

Do you remember the internet of the early 2000s? Neat single function websites that let you be creative and customize your spaces and weren't setting out to be the next major conglomerate (or to be bought by them). I'm building a series of websites that have simple concepts but too many of the players have tried to make their product so big. I also used to live in a very rural area so my goal is to make websites that load fast even on very slow internet. I'm starting with Lynx.boo. A linktree style website that lets you fully customize your CSS (and adds a bunch of classes to your links to…

Today I'm launching Postcard! I started Postcard when I deleted most social media, but still wanted a way to keep in touch with friends and my network. When I worked at Webflow, it became clear to me that most website builders are way too complex for individual users. So, I drew inspiration from social media - where all you need is a couple photos and text fields to get a great site online. So, I think I’ve about achieved a site builder that even my Mom could use. The product seems simple, but there are many under-the-hood optimizations. There's caching, CDNs, custom domain support, TLS…

Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

My buddy paulsingh and I have been working on this for a few weeks, got something up and running and wanted to show you. The problem we're solving: When you need customer service (your flight got canceled, strange fees on your bill, etc) you just want to talk to a real person. Waiting on hold wastes your time AND your concentration; you can't be coding in the zone when part of your brain is waiting for an operator. Our solution: We wanted to make it "one click" to reach a real person. How it works: You click on who you want to talk to (even a specific department, like the billing dept at…

I recently decided to try out Google Tasks as my only task management system, and while I find some things about the interface great, it really isn't suited for someone like me who has multiple lists with lots of elements on each. So, I whipped this together real fast and I can't imagine using Google Tasks without it anymore. I realized you might want it too, so I put it on the web. Enjoy :)
