Skewt
Skew-T sounding viewer for pilots, finally on Android
What it does
Skewt draws Skew-T Log-P soundings natively on your phone: forecast anywhere by map tap, search or GPS, plus the latest radiosonde from the nearest North American station. CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC and freezing level from MetPy. Offline cache, 14-day trial
Skewt turns forecast and observed soundings into an interactive chart built for a phone, with the indices that usually get eyeballed computed alongside it.
A real skew-T, drawn for a phone screen instead of shrunk onto one. Read a real skew-T for any location — tap the map, search a place, or use where you are. Scrub through the forecast hours and watch the profile change instead of reading one snapshot. Get CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC, and the freezing level computed alongside the chart rather than eyeballed off it. A skew-T log-P diagram is one of the most useful and least accessible tools in preflight weather. It shows where the layers are, gives a far better forecast of cloud tops than any textual product, and matters enormously for flying where terrain and marine air interact. Reading one usually means a desktop-oriented model site, or falling…from 42nddesign.com

A few weeks ago there was a request for GribStream to support this particular model https://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/products/rap/ to use it on Skew-T Log-P diagrams and so after banging my head against jpeg2000 compressed data within grib2 files I finally got it :). I'm sharing a python example to show how to create these charts. A Skew-T Log-P diagram is a type of thermodynamic chart used primarily in meteorology to plot atmospheric temperature and dew point profiles at various pressure levels. The "Skew-T" refers to the angle at which temperature lines are…

Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
